I have found a 5ft tiller that has the model FL1400 on it. Other than that, I can't find any other markings. Doing a google search, the only thing that I found was a tiller by Sicma. The guy tells me that it is about 10 years old but it has not been used. He say's that it has been sitting on a dealers lot for the last 10 years and that he has brought it up here to sell. Does this sound like a Sicma tiller? Is $750 a good price? Is there any thing I should watch for, being that it sat un-used for so long?

A 1400 would be 55" and I am not aware that Sicma had a FL model tiller 10 years ago. They has a ZLS & a ZLL but not a FL model. What color is it? Caroni had a FL model during that time period. There are 30 some companies making tillers in Italy and it could be any of them. The seals could be shot and the bearings may have rust in them due to water condensation in the gearboxes. What about the PTO?

How about a Caroni?

Caroni

If this is correct then I also found a couple of new ones:

Sweet Tractors

SSB Tractor (Not 100% positive of the brand, but the wording is straight from Caroni)

Of course it could be a SICMA:

TRAM Sales

The only problem with Tram site is that I can't find a tiller that matches this one on the SICMA website. The side-driveline case looks like a SICMA, but it's upper 3pt looks like a Caroni and it's weight is identical to the Caroni. Even the horse power ratings match the Caroni. Other models match, like the SICMA FLB series on the Tram website is a dead ringer for the SICMA CS series. Likewise the RG on Tram is an RG on SICMA. I'll float a theory; maybe the SICMA FL was made by Caroni until they came out with their own lightweight model.

I guess, I would have the following questions. What color? What does the driveline casing look like? Do you have a picture?

Big Dave,
The tiller is red and has a cast cover over the drive with the initials "WAC". Sorry, no photo's.

It's a Sicma and private labled WAC is in Bethel, OH and is a vender for Sicma. I believe this tiller is a ZLL chain driven tiller. The same tiller as a First choice RT04-56 or a Kioti KT03-55. It's not 10 years old either likely a 1998 model because that is when WAC started to switch from Caroni.

So, bottom line. Is this thing any good for light tilling? Is this a good price? What about the PTO? The shaft is there, if that's what you are asking. It also does not have a slip clutch, does that matter?

Thanks

Stumpman,

I got a quote from Ken at Sweet Tractors for a Caroni FL1400 for not an awful lot more. It was a few years old, but was brand new kept in a shed. If yours has been sitting around for a while I would be concerned about bearings being seized partially up if sitting outside.

Also there is other brands out there that would be brand new for just a bit more also.

Maybe you should give Ken a ring and see what he says. I was going to get one from him, but the shipping would add up and I know my neighbor would be upset if I got one rather than using his. I put about 6 hours on his this weekend.

Mark,

Can't the tiller be a WAC labeled Caroni that is more than 5 years old? I think the shape of the gear box on the side would be the key identification.

It is possible that WAC could be stamped on a Caroni but Andréa Caroni is the type of person that "Caroni" would also be visible on the tiller as well. Sicma and Caroni used some of the same components then, so the gearboxes in those years were the same.
