We rented a skid steer loader with a hydraulic auger when we built my pole barn too. Had never driven one before but it was easy. As Dave M said, the hydraulic auger has both forward and reverse so if it got stuck in the hole you could reverse it out. Also spin it clean.
We drilled 22 twelve inch holes four feet deep in less than a day then my neighbor borrowed it the next day, swapped the auger for a 9" one and drilled about 30 fence post holes.
The "harriest" part was backing the skid-steer off the trailer. I thught for sure I was going to flip over backwards!
