We rented a skid steer loader with a hydraulic auger when we built my pole barn too. Had never driven one before but it was easy. As Dave M said, the hydraulic auger has both forward and reverse so if it got stuck in the hole you could reverse it out. Also spin it clean.

We drilled 22 twelve inch holes four feet deep in less than a day then my neighbor borrowed it the next day, swapped the auger for a 9" one and drilled about 30 fence post holes.

The "harriest" part was backing the skid-steer off the trailer. I thught for sure I was going to flip over backwards!

Rob - comparing a Skid Steer w/ hydraulic drill to a 3 pt is kinda like comparing Godzilla to Tinkerbell. Having drilled 100's of holes with the Skid Steer I can say that this is a "drilln machine". As several other posts have noted - the drill has instant reverse at the flick of a switch that will reverse the drill to shake the bit clean or back out of a bad situation. Also due to the manuverability of the machine it is very easy to be precise about your drilling position and attitude. You can even drill into a bank at an angle if that is needed. As for going on and off a trailer - it may be more comfortable to back on keeping the bit mechanisim vey low.

Jag,
You got me on that one...
Righto! SQUEEZE THE HANDLES TO JAM INTO THE HOLE -- PULL-APART TO LIFT OUT. Or, preferably, forget the whole thing :)
