i bought a used frontier 1048 brush cutter and was wondering if anyone had an owner's manual in pdf form. i'm trying to figure out how to set it up so that it floats correctly and doesn't gouge into the dirt when going over uneven ground.

Of you search on deeres website you should be able to find it there.

Look at your tractor's instruction manual for the rockshaft lever and 3PH. There should be an adjustable stop (on the lever's slot). Set that stop so the lever doesn't allow the 3PH to drop to it's lowest point (which is why your cutter is digging in).
The stop should be set so when the lever is against it, the cutter's side skirts are 2-3 inches off the ground.
The cutter should have a "U" shaped bracket (I think the proper term is "float bracket") for the top link hook up. When the tractor's top link is connected, that "U" bracket should be set (by extending the top link) until it's pointing down about a 45 degree angle. This allows the cutter to float.
Also, the tail wheel should be on the ground and should be set so the front of the cutter (nearest the tractor) is about an inch lower then the cutter's rearmost skirt.
This will prevent most of the cutter's digging in, but it really depends on how uneven the ground is.

It's still a good idea to get the cutter's manual. You can view it on the Deere website, but you can't download it. If you bought the cutter recently, you could ask the seller for it. If he doesn't have it, your local Deere dealer can get a copy.

BTW, Frontier doesn't make their implements. They buy 'em and resell. For example, their finishing mowers are Woods and Befco brands.
