Chipper Chipper, what is it?

I'm going to be looking at a used chipper today. The guy says it works good. He bought it used and doesn't know the brand. It has a mechanical feed roller. I'm thinking Chinese. He want's $900 for it which sounds fair but I'm concered it will be to big for my 21 HP tractor. The guy he bought it from used it on a "Simplicity" tractor. I thought those were small tractors right? If so it should work.

So far as I know, Simplicity makes lawn mowers, lawn tractors and commercial mowers only.

I'm wondering if a "Simplicity" tractor has a standard pto on it.

Make sure it is designed to run with a PTO rotation that matches your tractor. I'd hate to see you buy it, only to find it is designed for a reverse rotation PTO.

I was right it was an old Chinese unit. It ran ok but just worth no more then the $900 he was asking. The real reason I didn't buy it wasn't the price or the condition it was the fact that it looked like too much effort to chip. The branches got hung up and stuck. It would be a real pain taking my BH on and off to use it. I think I'll burn instead.

Today, Simplicity does make what they call Garden Tractors with their most capable machine weighing 1285lbs with 3 cylinder Briggs & Stratton Diesel engine. It has a PTO and what looks to be a small 3pt. Their max tiller size is 50" & there is a FEL with a 48" bucket available.

Yeah, that is the problem with smaller chippers. They take a lot of effort to use. I have a little 10HP standalone that works OK but is a real workout. I hear that the slightly larger ones can perform pretty well.

We chip because we use the stuff for mulching flower beds, etc. But if my wife says she doesn't need mulch, I burn. Much easier.

I've debated this issue over and over. As tempting at it is to buy a new toy (implement) I think burning just makes more sense.

And where you cannot burn like Southern California. I just bite the bullet and haul it to the landfill. Costs $25 per trailer load and I smash it in tight. About 4 or 5 loads a year is cheaper than renting or buying a chipper. Then I can get all the mulch I want at the landfill just for loading it in the trailer. Or they will load it for $8 per load. Their huge chippers do a wonderful job of making fine mulch.

Aaaahhh San Diego. Lived there for ten years. Got my BS at UCSD. I loved your city. Trouble is I got homesick for the mountains. I guess you have to go back to your roots.
