Hi all,

Well I was weak for just one day over the winter and I ended up with a brandy-new m7040 4wd tractor

I mating up my old Ford 101 plow and seem to be having some problems. The furrow is just not neat and I seem to be getting the crap beat out of me plowing. I am going about 4mph and running the plow down about 6". I have broken the shear bolt on the front moldboard twice now. I never even knew it had a shear bolt. I have tried adjusting the landing lever and I think the rows are rolling over ok although showing some sod at times.

I looked at the tire spacing recommendations on the forum and honestly I don't think I am setup correctly with the m7040 but I am not sure what to do about it. Can I adjust the tire spacing without alot of grief?

I have a friend that will lend me a ford 3 bottom plow but I am not sure if the moldboard is bigger and therefore that might help me with the tire spacing.

Any advice is appreciated.

It looks like your front bottom might be a little low but that might be an illusion from the pics.

Set your draft control lever about half way then drop your lift lever to the bottom. Adjust the draft to get your desired depth.

What width cut do you have? You will not improve with the third bottom although the tractor should pull it.

I have a similar set-up w/ a 101 3-bottom. I have R1's which make a difference. You might get some wheel spin with a 3-bottom.

The results with the 2-bottom seem fine as far as the relationship with the tires is concerned.

It might be that 4 mph is a bit too fast. Try backing off a bit.

Also, as art stated, the front bottom is running deeper than the rear. Compounding that is the plow is not level when the tires are in the furrow. I can see how the front shear bolt would fail.

Lengthening the top link and shortening the right side lift link should level things up and make for a better result.

It is actually easier to set up a 3-bottom plow because the greater top area of the plow allows checking for level a simple task. With the way yours is set in the photo a 3rd bottom would be making a shallow furrow.

Silly as it sounds, a carpenter's level can be used to square things up.

Thanks for the feedback guys -we just have a bunch of rain dumped on us but when it dries up a bit I will try leveling it up better.
