Attaching pto shafts to a JD 5310

Does it not rotate freely when the engine is turned off?
I can rotate it by hand but it is really hard to turn so I need to use my full hand and then I can't have the drive shaft lined up so the teeth would just match up. I have to turn it and then pick up the shaft and see if I got lucky and the teeth match. It can take a lot of tries sometimes.

Oh so true. Its very frustrating, especially with a heavy shaft. Im pretty sure there isnt a pto wrench but maybe one of those lavatory wrenchs might help ya. I have had to use a big pair of channel lock pliers before but they are quite clumsy and awkard when trying to hold shaft too.

What I do is just attach the bottom links to the attachment, make sure the attachment is straight with the tractor and as level with the tractor as you can make it. For each of my attachments I have a rope with loops on the ends. Using the unattached top link of the attachment put one end of the rope thru the pin, then around the PTO shaft then thru the pin. Now the heavy PTO shaft is being support by the attachment and not me, is level with the PTO shaft on the tractor and I am not hitting my head on the top link.
I put a piece of tape (or paint) on one of the curves of the attachment end of the PTO shaft. With the tractor OFF, I have no problem turning the PTO shaft by hand on the tractor to line up with the mark.

One thing I suggest (and it helps me immensely) is the use a bungee to hold the weight of the PTO drive shaft. The bungee can be attached to the implement's 3PH frame or anywhere else convenient.
