Gents I'm wondering if someone can help me with a clutch question. I have a Landpride RTR1558 that was new to me last year. I was doing some tilling on weekend and the clutch slipped.

When I check the manual it talks about fully tightening nuts to allow clutch to slip, then to 'turn all 4 nuts fully back' (ie loosen them ...'clutch is ready for use'. This seems to be the opposite of what i would expect, shouldn't I tighten to stop slip? It doesn't suggest any small adjustment to stop slipping, either all in or all out?

Help!

Cheers

Sounds backwards tp me also. Can you post a pic of the slipclutch?

I don't know about this clutch specifically, but normally you would tighten the bolts all the way(no slip) then back the nuts of 2 turns( or what ever your manual states), then run it for a bit then check the temperature, if it's cold loses the nuts 1/2 a turn and test again, I it heats up quickly then tighten. Also keep in mind do this test in appropriate grass/conditions, if you do it in something thicker than the unit can handle the clutch might be slipping simply be cause the units overloaded and not that the setting is wrong.

That is what the manual says for my RTR1050 also. But you have to match the clutch to your horse power. For my little 2305 with 18 PTO Hp I run the nuts up to the clutch by hand and then back them off 2 full turns. If I back them all the way off like the manual says, the engine will stop suddenly if I hit an obstacle hard enough.

Thanks Bigtiller, I had tightened the bolts a 1/2 turn yesterday, I'll try going the other way. I just can't figure out how this works to increase tension on the clutch.

Your clutch is designed totally opposite of mine. Follow the directions in the manual you posted the link to.

The design of your clutch does require tightening of the nuts, to loosen the tension.

Would that be a "self adjusting clutch"? The rtr10 series had a self adjusting slip clutch.

I agree with bigtiller that you have to adjust your clutch for the amount of PTO Hp you have. I just recently bought a Kodiak rotary cutter with a slip clutch that was "supposed" to have been set at the factory. This is the first slip clutch that I have dealt with.

In the heaviest stuff my clutch wasn't slipping. I followed the manuals advice and adjusted and still no slippage. Then I decided I am going to adjust it the way I want to. I backed the nuts all the way out and tightened them until I couldn't slip it by hand. Next I snugged them up one turn of my wrench. Lucky for me I hit the jackpot. It's the right amount of slippage for my mowing conditions. In heavy stuff it isn't heating up.

I managed to find a standard screw driver tip that matched the end of the bolt to the nut face. Hopefully this will help me gauge the slip clutch a couple of times a year when I decide to slip it and get the rust off the plates. The only downfall to that is as the clutch plates wear down, that won't be a good gauge.
