I currently have a Woods 60" light duty, I imagine it's the same as the current model BB60. For one it's too narrow, I want a 72" model, but I don't want another light duty mower, I've already bent and banged this one up pretty bad. I'm currently planning on continuing to use this one until it either breaks, or I come across a good deal on a HD used on (or good Medium duty). I just hope I find another mower before I break this one and can't get much for it when I sell it.

...The Bush Hog 406, Landpride 36 series and Rhino 472 would fall in Super Heavy duty. Overkill in my opinion.

I would look at Medium duty for your HP. If you had more HP or were planning on moving up to more HP look at Heavy duty.
Good luck in your search.

Thanks for the helpful post, I will look into the Rhino series as well. Honestly, I'm really looking for just about the heaviest duty mower I can get away with without hurting my tractor (while still being able to use the mower:laughing:)

I'm starting to see that I will probably not be able to run the Bush Hog 406 with my tractor. I may have to go with the medium duty mower but the reason I want to be at the upper limit of my tractor is because I will be upgrading to a larger tractor in a couple years. However, it would be stupid to buy a super heavy duty mower now, in anticipation of a larger tractor down the road, if I can't use it with my current model. I anticipate my next tractor will be around 50hp at the PTO for reference.

I have a 40 pto hp IH diesel tractor and have been thinking about a Bush Hog 296. Recently requested pricing on a couple Land Pride models with similar specs.
Outdoors,
Have you gotten a price on a new 296? I just got a price for a new Land Pride RCR 2672 and it was $3679 with a front chain guard and slipper clutch. I wonder how the 296 compares. I'm not looking to buy new as I can't afford that, but I like to know what to expect to pay for a good used one. I tend to think if I can get a good condition used implement for half the cost of new, I did pretty good.

I purchased a Brown Mfg rotary over the HD Bush Hog and saved quite a bit of cash. Mine is a 484 and is definitely heavy duty. While the 484 might be too big for your machine. If so, maybe the 460 will work. Definitely worth checking out if you are going HD

I like your user name

Any idea what the Brown 472 cutter would cost? I'd also be very interested in one of those but I've never seen one on the used market, must say something about their quality

I run a 306 behind my little L3400:D

It is a tad lighter than a 406, but it is still a really heavy duty cutter. 1100lbs.

Leaving the FEL on when using it is a must. But I'm not too hilly either.

The 306 is a solid cutter. If you happen on a good deal, dont be afraid of it. I got one for $200 about a year and a half ago.

LD1, that's a heck of a deal you found! How does the 306 compare to the 406? Is it also an extreme duty mower that was the predecessor of the 406? One thing I worry about is the stress on the top link with the heavy weight.

Are there any tow behind models I could go with? I found a 407 (or maybe 307?) for sale, it is a heavy duty 7' Bush Hog that is an offset tow behind. I actually REALLY liked the idea of this mower, but I think 7' is simply too big for my tractor, I believe it's rated at 60hp minimum PTO. Is there any way I could run this mower effectively? I know if I were to get a larger tractor in the future I could get a kit to convert it to a 3point hitch model.

I'm very interested in the tow behinds but I've only seen them in 7' versions, I think that is probably too large for my little tractor?

I dont think the 306 was a predecessor to the 406. I think they were both avaliable at the same time. The 406 is about 300lbs heavier too. I think it has a bigger gearbox, and the top deck is a little thicker too.

As to the 7', I dont know from experience, but several members on here say that an 8' twin spindle is the way to go vs a 7' single. It makes the overall length MUCH shorter and dont take as much HP to get going. Again, this is just what I hear on here. I have no first hand experience.

My first MD mower was a MX 6, which is junk compared to my 3 other HD mowers. In 3 yrs I broke a blade in half and bent the rear wheel 3 times. I then got a Woods 720 which is a wonderful mower for trees up to 3" and thick grass, I like the flat deck. Also have a Brown Tree Cutter which will maul a 7" sweet gum/soft wood but does terrible on thick grass. Lastly I have a Bush Hog 306 which does great on woody brush and trees up to 4" but not too good on thin grass. Brown by far builds the heavest mowers, but are more them most of us will need. I would look very hard at the BH 296 or Woods 720.

Okay it sounds like the Bush Hog 296 would be a good match for my tractor, even still maybe more than I need but I really wanna go with a heavy mower.

I started doing something I should have done before even buying my tractor....I started listing the implements I want to eventually purchase, the size of them, and the weight of them. Then I started thinking that all the implements I'm thinking about require a larger tractor than I currently have.

I probably should have decided on the implements I wanted, THEN bought the tractor :laughing::laughing:

Not sure but you can go to Brown Mfg website and find a local dealer who could tell you.

Here's a used 460 at a pretty good deal, but unfortnately not close to you

5 FOOT BROWN CUTTER

I haven't seen many used Brown mowers for sale. Mine has taken some real abuse, especailly backing into areas where I am unable to see what lies beneath. The backside of my deck shows it too, but that is why I bought it
