I have an older bush, I used it last summer and had no problems cutting when I start up the pto on the tractor it shakes the **** out of the bush hog then its fine after it starts. I was starting it in Low on the Hi/Low trans of the tractor, Now the last time I used it the shear pin broke, I bought it (bush hog) Used, I dont know what pin was in it before but I bought the #2 shear pin at TSC King Kutter I think, broke as soon as it started, I can turn the gear box on the hog by hand not bound up. not sure why its all the sudden shearing the #2 pin at start up HELP...

Check your blades. They sometimes get caught in a folded position and cause the big shake at start up. Can easily happen after sitting for the winter. Some PTO equipment uses grade 2 bolts and some grade 5. If you can identify the maker and model someone may be able to help.

Yep, the swinging blades get folded up. Shakes to beat h3ll until they spin out.

As to the bolt, what brand and model of cutter is it? That may help us to help you.

Also, what diameter is the shear pin/bolt?

I'd try a higher grade bolt and see how it works.
As Mark wrote, those pivoting blades get stuck sometimes...and it doesn't have to be after a winter or even extended inactive time.
If the vibration doesn't subside in 5-10 seconds, you may want to check the blades.

All my hogs use a grade #3 sheer bolt, blades are folded up causing an out of ballance. it happends to all of us. replace the sheer bolt an go. You can buy an after market slip clutch. tsc. has them for $69.00 intall higher grade sheer bolt after installing the slip clutch and breaking in the slip clutch and you won't have to worry about it again. just remember to resmoke the slip clutch once a yr. after sitting though the winter monthes.

Dunno if your Ford has a 2 stage clutch or not. If no, start with engine at idle. Engage PTO. Then gradually increase throttle to PTO rpms. That will "unfold" the blades more gently, minimize the vibration, and be considerably easier on shear bolts. If yes, all the better. Follow the steps above PLUS ease out on the clutch rather than just poppin' it.
