pto chipper/shredder

Island, I wish I had known you were thinking of selling. I'm local to the RI line and would have taken the ferry. I used to deer hunt on the island when I was a younger lad.

I did pick up a good deal on mine though, and really like the blower.

Come on back and help us control Lyme Disease! I don't have the skill to hunt with bow and arrow but I give a local shell fisherman permission to hunt on my land and he leaves nice venison roasts in my freezer. I made a nice stew last week. If I was an archer I'd sit on my front porch and bag supper! Like shooting ducks in a pond as my land separates two conservation areas and the deer walk across our yard every morning and evening. Sometimes they don't even seem to look up when I drive the tractor towards them.

Those ticks can be really hard to hit with an arrow!

My wife and I are starting to think about a PTO chipper again. I have read over threads in the past, and looked at the Wallenstiens and BearCat's. There was even a Bearcat on Craigslist yesterday(appeared to be CH5540) but it was gone fast...

My question though, is what about pto chipper/shredders? It would really be nice to be able to shred garden stuff too, mulch etc.

What is a good make/model for a chipper/shredder?

We have a NH TC40D, with 35+HP on the PTO, so power is not a problem.
Hello Robert,
You and I have at several things in common:
We have practically the same tractor-my TC40 is a 12x12.
We both have property in the same forested Sierra foothills-my property is near Mariposa at 2500' elevation.
I will assume you have oak trees as I do.
My chipper bought new (w/o shredder or mechanical/hydraulic feed) is a Wallenstein BX42. It works well on fir, cedar, mulberry and the like but when it comes to chipping up twig type stuff, it has a tendency to clog up in the lower chute area so for thaqt reason I keep a wrench on hand. I have only used it a few times down here in the eastern central valley where I live and not yet used it up in Mariposa where I have a lot of oak. My fear through my valley chipping experience is that it won't work well at all on the Mariposa oak twigs as they are quite wirey and jagged clustered on the branches and will fight bitterly going through the 4" hopper opening-I don't even think a 6" opening would be any better-again, this is only conjecture on my part.
Good luck and as others have said-do your best to give whatever you decide on a trial run on your property.

The last time I hunted the island I had to crawl through briars and trail the deer to the beach. Then once I was through the briar the deer got up and went into the ocean. I ended up shooting it again and going for a swim. :ashamed:

We just got back from picking up the Bearcat 70554. The guy advertised he only used it once; I believe him... The feed chutes show no wear. And, it was stored inside...

Pictures tomorrow :D

The blades should be inspected. You can't be sure how he used it or what was put through it. If they aren't razor sharp you might consider turning them over before getting started.

Except for the incessant raking chips out of the way from the discharge chute it is a great little chipper.

Although I normally agree with gwdixon...I think I'd just see how it works before inspecting the blades.
I do suggest you grease the fittings (not many of them...but you may have to pull a shroud off).

The Crary Bearcat might be different, but the Woods version of this chipper comes with a pretty short PTO driveshaft. With a standard 3PH, I don't think you'll have a problem. But if you have a QH installed or Pat's Easy Change on your lower links; you may need to remove them. Actually, if you have a quick hitch, the chipper probably won't hook up (you'll have to pull the QH off). The lower links will hook up OK, but the top link might not.

Good luck, BE SAFE!!! And let us know how it works for you!

Don't forget that in order to cover 5" chipping with a 3" blade that you have 2 inside blades and 2 outside blades. The inside and outside blades can be swapped when dull.

Is it true that the newer units have double sided blades ?
