I was just looking through a catalog and it had a round back and traditional "squared" off one ... whats the difference and pros and cons?

Round ones miss more things (trees, fences) when turning - thus, more maneuverable.

Square decks are cheaper to manufacture and hit more things in a turn.

I think that is what you mean. A photo/link or two would help.

I've had both and one subtle difference is that when mowing in reverse, the round back has more of a tendency to push tall weeds off to the side where they may or may not get cut. The square back does a better job guiding them under the deck. That said, I trim around a lot of trees and if stuff isn't too tall, I can trim closer with the round back.

If you look under the square ones, you'll see a piece of curved metal welded to make it round on the inside. I have a 5 ft bushhog brand that I accidentally backed over a stump with and broke the curved metal piece underneath. I continued to mow, but it did not mow well at all. I had it welded it back in and was back in business mowing like normal. For whatever reason, the back really needs to be curved (one way or the other) to cut properly.

I should also add a disclaimer that this is not a heavy duty bushhog, there is no way it would cut through a 2 inch sapling.

Not all SQ back have such deflector in the rear. My old Ford sq back is just open on the back. never had anything there.

The old sq back ones (with no deflector) will cut much like a discbine. they really only cut the grass once before pileing it up on the left side of the hog. So when i get done mowing it looks like ive raked my pasture into rows already.

mine will cut down 2" saplings, ive done it no probs.
