Found a used 72" Frontier Finish Mower in excellent condition but the price seems high and I don't know what these cost new. It is in good shape from what I can see but couldn't see the blades. Its on consignment at a local equipment dealers shop so he could only tell me its 3 years old and it has not had heavy use. Asking price is $1600 which is bit more than I was wanting to put out for a mower.

Is this a reasonable price for one of these mowers? Frontier is a JD line of attachments isn't it? Are they made here in the USA? I have a JD X534 mower and I know it was pricey compared to other makes. It has been a great mower and excellent quality. I don't mind paying a bit more for something made in America, but I want my moneys worth too.

My tractor did not come with stabilizer bars on the 3 pt hitch. When are they needed? I understand what they do just not sure which attachments require them or if they are optional in most circumstances.

The Frontier mowers are made by both Woods and BEFCO. Both are great mowers.
If it's a Woods, the gearbox will have "WOODS" cast into it. Also, the front to side will be rounded (see the attached picture PRD7200). If it's a BEFCO, the front to side will be squared off.

I've owned both BEFCO and Woods...but my Woods is sold by Frontier and is, quite likely, the same mower you're looking at.

My mower was used (very lightly, from the condition) and the price was $1500. In my opinion, well worth the price.
That doesn't mean you can't negotiate with the seller though.

As far as the "stabilizer bars"...do you mean anti-sway links (reduce side to side sway)? If so, yes, you really do want them. Your profile doesn't list a tractor...it lists a skidsteer and a lawn tractor or Zero Turn mower. What kind of tractor do you have?

BTW, it's a good possibility that Frontier mower you're looking at is set up for a quick hitch....mine was.

As noted, the Frontier is probably a Woods unit. New, the prd7200 sells for $2000, so your dealer is in the ballpark. I have the PRD8400. Great unit. Definitely need the sway links. Good luck. Let us know what you buy.

Thanks for the replies. My tractor is a ford 2000. Guess i will be looking for some bars to use with the mower.

Personally, I think that price is a bit high, but would expect that from a dealer. Or at least it would be high for the southeast area. I probably shouldn't post these links, but as one example here is a NICE looking 5ft Frontier mower for $1k. You can't tell me that adding another foot justifies a $5-600 price increase!

FRONTIER 5' FINISHING MOWER

And another nice looking 5ft unit for $1100:

But, these are not dealers either, so maybe that makes some difference? Perhaps the dealer would make something right, if you had a problem with it right away? I'm sure a private seller would not help out any, if something happened to it right away.

the last link is a 1060E which is alot lighter/cheaper than a 1060r. I have a 1060R and mine is allot beefier than that one!

Yes, it looks similar to those examples you gave but 72" and in just as good condition if not better. It's sitting on a equipment dealers lot but he says it is not his it belongs to someone else. I'm guessing he gets a slice for selling it. But I will make an offer keeping in mind that there are at least two auctions coming up in the next 3 weeks within 20 miles and I should be able to find something there but since we are into the mowing season its not the best time from a buyers perspective.

There are a number of 60" mowers for sale in the area that are listed in $500 to $750 range. The 500s are lost causes/need major TLC and the 700s are used but serviceable condition. The few I have seen that are 2 to 4 YO and in good or better condition are listed from $800 to $1000.

Part of my original question was is Frontier a line of implements sold by JD. I thought I remembered seeing implements under that name when I spec'd out my x534 a couple years ago. I went back to the JD site and yes, they do have a line of grooming mowers with the Frontier label on them and I see a mower there which looks to be identical to the one I'm looking at. Looks like its a GM3072

well, i got the mower today. Frontier GM1072R that I was looking at, but for a little less, 1400. Been looking for close to 2 months and after a couple auctions and ads on Craigslist and in the paper this is the best deal out there right now.
It is in excellent shape, not beat or abused, looks to be 2 or 3 years old. I didn't snap a pic but i will tomorrow. Need to check the drive shaft for length and I'll need pins since its a clevis type connection. Maybe I'll get to work it tomorrow, not sure i have a bunch of other chores to get done first. Also need to grease it and the condition of the blades and that they are tight before i put any power to it.

Well I got to do some mowing this afternoon. I snapped a pic but forgot
I had the camera in close-up mode so the photo is blurry, I'll get a better
shot next time I am over there which probably won't be until next weekend.

Just started doing my homework when I came across this thread. I just found a Frontier 72" today. I see this thread started with a GM1072 mower. The one I am looking at is a GM3072. is the "3" series heavier duty or lighter or ?? This unit looks very good do not know it's age it was just sitting by itself in front of a store that is closed for the holiday. no wear on the Pins and no paint chipping from areas I would expect it to wear from vibration. I have only seen a Frontier brochure for 10 and 20 series no 30's
