I'm looking to buy a used rotary cutter and just looked at an older (perhaps very old) Woods 60" cutter. The guy said he bought it 3 years ago from a dealer, but failed to tell me that it was used prior to that. That's OK, but I was expecting it to be much newer. There is no way of telling how old it is other than it doesn't look anything like the ones posted on Woods website.
It has been painted over many times, but the Woods decals are still visible through the paint. Unfortunately I couldn't find any other identification on it. It has the typical signs of being used and setting outside, but nothing too bad. The PTO shaft and clutch didn't have all the protective covers but the u-joints seemed solid. With regard to the PTO shaft I'm only concerned about the slip clutch.
The owner started it up and it turned over find, but it did seem like the clutch on the PTO might have been slipping when the PTO was first engaged (first 1 to 2 seconds).
Cosmetically it is used. The blades seemed to be tight and I question how hard they would be to remove to lubricate, sharpen or replace. Perhaps replacement blades are not available.
I plan on using this to clear some trails and will likely run into a number of stumps, small trees or brush.
Questions:
1) Is there a way to ID approximate year or model for replacement parts?
2) Are replacement parts still available? Or has the designed remained relatively unchanged over the years?
3) Can the PTO clutch be rebuilt and are they generally of a standard design?
4) Is an overriding pto adapter needed for correct operation? The cutter was behind a very old Oliver tractor and it had an overriding adapter between the tractor PTO output shaft and the Cutter PTO shaft.
5) What is a stump jumper with respect to this implement?
Before anyone asks, I forgot to take a camera along.
Thanks in advance for any help.
