I am debating whether to buy a breaking plow/disk or a rotary tiller. My neighbor is from the old school of thought and believes that a tiller is very hard on the transmission. He believes a breaking plow followed by a disk will better preserve the longevity of the tractor. I am wanting to turn and break 15-20 acres of land with my 40 hp Kioti tractor. If I go with a tiller, it'll be a 6' chain driven tiller. The breaking plow will be a 2 plan plow with a 6'-8' disk. Obviously it would take less time and gas tiller the land. Any thoughts on the wear and tear of the tractor using a tiller vs. breaking plow/disk? Which of the 2 solutions do you prefer for a small hobby farm?

Why would a tiller be harder on a transmission than the other implements? You would be going slow and putting the vast majority of the power through the PTO.

If you have any grass or ground cover that will have a tendency to get wound around a tiller.

What do you plan on doing with the ground once tilled?

Mold board plow and disc have far fewer moving parts to wear or break.

I have a bunch of all small saplings (1000's) growing up in my fields and bush hogging the field the twice a year does not seem to be working. In fact, I think the field has doubled the amount than last year. Not sure if bush hogging it 3-4 times a year will do much either. I was guessing that a tiller or breaking plow would do a much more effective job, but I am open to any suggestions to get rid of this saplings. Also, curious about the wear and tear of the tiller tines if I cut 15-20 acres of land filled 1"-2" thick saplings?

Oh if you have small saplings up to 2" I really think I would go with a plow, tillers are not going to like that.

I am curious also and a little off question, but I am gonna throw in there 15-20 acres is a Small Farm not a small HOBBY farm IMO, especially if your gonna work the entire 15-20 acres.

I like the tiller idea, but as already posted the mold board and disc have less moving parts and maybe the longevity of all of it, tractor and implements. With all the saplings you may look for a used mold board and disc and then after a couple of seasons if you still want to try the tiller then do it.

Wait a minute..... I think I answered the question and learned something.....lol.

In my opinion, tillers aren't meant for that kind of area. The plow and disc will take quite a few more passes, but the finished product will be more what you want to re-plant. I'm looking for a tiller for doing garden plots, but fields really don't come into the equation. You'll likely wear out at least a couple sets of tines depending on the soil you have.

Around my parts, it is mainly timber or cattle country. 20 acres is a small hobby farm for growing cattle.:)

What is a mold board?

The small farm vs small hobby farm was just an opinion thing.

Mold board plow at times maybe refereed to as a turning plow or bottom plow also. Guess just depends on the person.

Here is a link of google images for a mold board plow.
