The ad states The Rip and Dig can also dig shallow trenches up to a depth of 12"-24" deep (depending on the size of the machine and the hardness of the soil). So I am wondering where are you getting the 8" depth? I don't have a back hoe and I thought of this for digging irrigation ditches which will only have to be six inches anyway and I think anything deeper I would have problems because of the caliche here.

Isn't it a spade when moving forward which could dig to 24"? I think the 8" figure applies only to the ripper fixture which is not mounted when digging a trench.

Not sure what it would cost...(looks pretty easy to make), but does look like it could be handy at times. Like just ripping the trench to burry cable or phone line or invisible dog fence where those are only a few inches deep.

Also looks like the narrow part of the bucket (spade) would be handy for digging and transplanting small trees.

As someone else mentioned...it beats a shovel. Sure, its no backhoe. A backhoe is 20x's the digging machine as this, but likely 20x's the cost too.

Oh...and I dont see it causing any damage to a FEL either.

Looks quite useful, I use my pallet forks slid together quite often to do the same thing for digging.

Guys I built something similar, and it IS useful, about 10 times faster than a hand shovel, and 1/100 of the work. Mine will dig about 18 inches deep. It is actually quite fast to bust out a trench, especially if you have a hydrostat tractor so you can see saw rapidly. this looks like a good tool to me.. But I have a welder and a bandsaw. so...

the last post is my final critique on the shovel after using it for some time. My last use of it was a couple of weeks ago, to bury a beloved pet. I was very glad to have it.

What kind of sissy tractors are you guys buying that you worried about your Fell comming apart, I have dug 5' holes, plowed snow for years, tumbled boulders I couldn't lift. I hardly think a ratchet rake could do any damage to my loader. What exactly do you use your loader for if your afraid to use it to push into a pile of dirt

personally I use my "loader" for its intended purpose...that's why it's not called a "front end" dozer/excavator etc...
