I have a JD 5075m, primarily got it for loader work, but I have some fire breaks, paths, and a small 1 acre field to mow. Frankly, don't know a whole lot about mowers. Grew up on a farm with a small (4 ft) bushhog, and was planning on getting something similar, but thought I would check for ideas.

With that size tractor, I would get an 8' dual spindle cutter. I have one for my 56 PTO HP tractor and it never bogs it down. Could probably even go with a 10' pull behind, just depends on how much your going to mow, whether you need to transport it, how much space you have yo store it, how much money you want to spend, etc.

that size of machine would run a 10' mower.. if you wantd a lil more maneuverability.. a dual spindle 8'er would be a breeze.

edit:

I see tnwv beat me to it.. :) ditto what he said.. :)

i have a howse HD model 10' the HD120 they make a HD96 as well.

beware..t ere are plenty of light and medium duty cutters out there for not alot less than a HD of that size. I paid 2400$ for my HD 10' cutter a few years ago.

it's given me good service. has thick metal and is quite tough. I've puleld it behind my 70hp ford 5000 and a 95 hp NH 7610s

I mainly mow paths on my property and small areas .So I felt a 10' was too big for paths. I wanted either a 7' single spindle or 8' dual spindle.
I liked Bush Hog, John Deere, LandPride and Rhino.
I ended up with a Bush Hog 297, 7' single spindle. It was the first deal I found on a used one.

in most cases if you can heft a single 7 you can run a doubvle 8.. I'd take a double 8 over a single 7 any day. less rear weight... 8 might be hard to haul, if hauling though... lots of issues either way..

My cutter is a Kodiak HD8. I'm on my second season with it and am very pleased thus far. I've mowed over some pretty thick stuff and have yet to even nick a blade. It leaves a nice cut for a brush hog and costs about half what a bush hog or land pride will. They all are nice and will do a good job for a long time if taken care of, just depends on how much money you want to put in one. If you do a search for threads I've started or posts I've made you will find several pictures of mine in use.

I'm glad no one has said that your tractor is too big for what you intend to mow with it! I'm looking to upgrade my tractor in a couple years and sometimes worry that I will be getting something that is more 'overkill' than I need. Are you happy with the 5075 for the loader work you do? Thats about the size I'm thinking of as well, and will be mowing 3 or 4 small 1 acre fields with it as well as trails like you mentioned.

i look at it like this. if you can make it thru the gates and turn around.. it ain't too big :)

I mow 13.2ac with a 15' batwing.. or 10' fixed deck.. or 6-5-4' mowers.. whatever I feel like or have time for.. etc..
