I need to replace the pto shaft for my ancient Rebel RB60R and I am having a nightmare getting the old ujoint off of the shaft. Here is what is says in the manual with reference to installing the u joint:

"To install the U-jooint, first drive the sheer pin out of the input shaft and remove the retaining ring and thrust washer. Slide the U-joint yoke onto the shaft as far as it will go, then replace the thrust washer and retaining ring being sure it snaps securely into place. This prevents the U-joint from coming off in the event of the pin shearing."

I find no retaining ring and or washer. What do I do?

here is a picture of the actual part:

Have you dug all the dirt and crud out of iinside of the the gearbox yoke?(the one on the right side of the photo?
There should be an internal snap ring just at the base of the yoke that holds it in place against the gearbox stub.

There should be an internal snap ring just at the base of the two yokes that holds them in place against the shaft and gearbox stub.

The input yoke should have a shear pin at the base(your photos are to far away to really see any detail

Thanks so much for the help. As it turns out there was no snap ring in place - who knows how long it has been missing. The yoke was on the shaft and was not going to come off even though it would spin freely without the sheer pin/bolt in place. I finally decided to cut the yoke off with a torch (very carefully). I now need the washer/spacer that goes between the yoke and the shaft housing as well as a new snap ring. If you have an idea where to get these parts without waiting for Bush Hog I would love to hear it. When the picture comes through from my phone I will post it.

A local auto machine shop will have everything you need. They work on U-joints all the time and a PTO shaft is essentially the same thing. They will have a box of spare parts to look through.
