Frontier RC line versus JD MX Series

I just ordered at JD 4105. For a Rotary cutter the JD MX series is roughly $600 more then the Frontier. I am going to mow my own field but may do others in future. Is it worth it? Any experience with either? I know the JD is better but is it $600 better?

Part 2 - I have never used a rotary mower, the dealer said I need a 6' RM to cover the 66" wheelbase of the tractor. If not the cut will not be right because of the tires driving over grass and would have to go over grass that pops up a second time. I thought about it and that doesn't make sense. If you mowed in reverse I guess, but no matter how wide it is your tires run it over first? Am I missing something?

The MX6 is about a half ton, I think I would rather go with a 60" cutter? Any thoughts, obviously larger would save time but that is not an issue. Would I be crazy to drop to a 5'? JD doesn't offer in the book the MX6 for my model, can't be hp, maybe hitch lift? As I write this I think I only want a 5' no matter how I go?

I have a MX6 that I use on my Kubota L5040 that has 44 pto horsepower. You tractor has 32.5. My lift is 3000 pounds 24 inches behind the links and yours is 2200. I have chains on my MX6 so I think it weighs in over 1100 pounds. I have no issues at all lifting it. Even with my mom and sister sitting on the back edge. They wern't riding, it was just to test the lift in case I wanted to go to a twin spindel 8 footer. With my lift I lifted the MX6 and my mom and sis, about 300 pounds, and it lifted it all VERY easy. And they were on the very back edge! I have a loader and bucket to keep the front tires from lifting up. I would say your tractor could lift a MX6 but would need lots of weight in the front to keep it stable, lots.

Now on my farm the MX6 needs every bit of the 44 pto power to run through tough weeds/fescue grass unless I go pretty slow. In 1st or 2nd gear I can cut anything on the farm 2"+ and under. If your just mowing fields and not clearing brush/saplings a lighter built mower is better in your situation I think. Less wear and tear on the hitch, the lighter blades (Frontiers blades are .5x3" and the MX has .5X4") are easier to turn due to less inertia.When you do bog down a bit they recover faster. I think the the smaller gears in the gearbox are also somewhat easier to turn.

I would go with the RC2072. You'll end up wishing you had a 8 footer in the end so may as well just be off two feet instead of three! It weighs in at 350 pounds less. If your clearing brush and 10 foot saplings go MX 5. Mowing overgrown fields of blackberries and grass go with the 6 foot Frontier. Oh if it matters the Frontier is made in USA by Woods and the MX series is made in Mexico by Deere.

Part 2 :confused2: Dealers argument makes no sense. The reasons to go wider is to get more done and you can get closer to things like fences without having your tractor too close.

I would also get the Frontier 6'. Now is time to get front weights if you need them (free money)
