Tractor
Case DX 40 8/1/03
Hi, I am in the market for a new cutter to replace my old 6' one. I am trying to decide between a USED bush hog 285 or a NEW Rhino172 or Woods bb72x. The 285 is in pretty good condition ( a little faded) and is more than 5 years old (guessing around 8 yrs.). The price difference is at around $900 between the new ones and the used one. I cut 2" or so sapplings sometimes, otherwise just a mix of brush. The old cutter is only a 5 footer but rated as a heavier duty than the new ones. All have slip clutches. new ones have warrenty, 6 foot cutters, but lighter duty. (1 1/2 cutting capacity). I have a case dx 40 tractor. any thoughts??? Thanks for any input!! Griz.

Of the ones you list I'd buy the Rhino. It has 10 guage steel and a gearbox rated up to 65 hp. Also extra foot.

Even if you have to wait a little longer try to buy new. You yourself say not sure of 285's age, and this coming from a Bushhog owner. If you go the new route check the gearbox oil yourself and don't take dealers word. Just my :2cents:
Post a pic or two of your final decision.

So, it sounds like a 6 footer is the way to go. I will check out the price of the new 286's but i don't think i can quite afford one. (I know i would love it) I have kind of been leaning towards the rhino. A dealer still has last years on the lot and says the new ones are going to be about $400 more. Maybe just a line I don't know. griz

well you can get their price.an then tell them you want their bottom $ cash price an see if it suits you.the dealer knocked $400 off the price of my bushhogg 286 because he remembered what happened over $400 the last time i delt with him.
