Dr chipper

I would really like to have a Wallenstein but I found a used dr chipper. It is a older unit. Are they self feeding like the Wallenstein or do you have to push it through? I attached a picture.

I found what I think is the owners manual and it says it is self feeding. Anyone have any experience with one of these?

I have the tow behind model, it is self feeding.

With a sharp knife and properly spaced anvil it will self feed, provided that what you are chipping doesn't offer much resistance. A branch with lots of green leaves or stiff branches off the main limb will require you to squeeze it into the chute.

I went and looked at this one it was in pretty good condition but could use a belt. It was really small and not a self feeding model. I was about the size of the chippers that lowes sell except pto driven.

I have a DR chipper like the one pictured and use it behind my x749 on occasions but really it is too small for most of my jobs. The throat is small so feeding crooked branches is a waste of time. Will work find with something such as sweetgum saplings.

The anvil is a metal plate that the wood is shoved against as the knives contact the wood.

Typically for a given model chipper, there is a specific clearance (from the knives) that the anvil needs to be set to .... usually with a feeler gauge

I noticed when I tried this one that the throat was really small. Is the anvil at the bottom of the throat?

I have one and the anvil is at the bottom of the throat. It is manual feed. Do not pretend otherwise. Anything other that fairly straight wood will have to be pushed in. . Be sure you have thick gloves to handle the vibration. Willie Jones

Thanks for the replies now I am more educated for next time. I also learned I do not want a side discharge. No more than I tried this one it already had a huge pile under the discharge chute, so the pile needed to be moved or the tractor.
