Self Contained PTO

I'm looking for a standalone engine similar to this My Draft Horse Super Store: Pioneer Liberty PTO Carts -- but stationary (doesn't need to be a horse drawn cart ) to power a chipper.

Has anyone seen such a thing?

Many farm equipment dealers sell pto power units. Most are large 100 hp and up but I am sure smaller ones are available.

Do you already have a chipper that you want to use? Seems like it would be easier and cheaper to buy a gasoline powered wood chipper, rather large ones can be had, and it appears by your link that they would be cheaper than buying just the pto unit. Sorry, maybe I am missing something but I fail to see the advantage of using the pto unit, especially with something like a chipper.

Most pto driven attachments need the weight and pulling capacity of the tractor to work effeciently, not to mention the tractor has the ability to lift and move the attachment. Again, maybe you could explain why this is what you are looking for.

okay, so with further thought I could see why this unit would be useful if you had multiple pieces of equipment to power such as a chipper, generator, water pump, and a conveyor, but this still does not seem to be your case.

I'm trying to buy a Kubota L4330HSTC from a local business. They literally bought the tractor to power a chipper to shred promotional materials, once a month, in a stationary position and that's all it's used for. The owner said if I could find him a suitable alternative, he'd sell the tractor to me at a fair price. So, here I am.

The chipper is essentially used as a big shredder of sorts, not for wood.

I've seen the standalone units, I just don't know what they're called.

Could be really pricey to buy one off the shelf. How much PTO HP is needed? Chippers really demand a good clutch, because they turn at very high RPM, but don't have a tranny, so you have to feather start them.

I've seen one listed here (slightly used) on CraigsList. It was powered with a 25hp Honda twin. It was used to run a PTO firewood processor, so I know they are out there.

When you consider for a moment that a standard 540 pto is using gears to reduce the shaft speed by about 5 to 1 and that most chippers use belts to increase the speed by the same amount roughly then why not use a direct drive setup with a slip clutch? Deoending on the chipper used this might be easy to do.

I would think an 8n would drive that chipper just fine.
How about a trade? You can pick up a running one for about $2 - 3k around here.
$2 - 3k seems like a fair price to pay for a L4330HSTC.
In fact, I might admit to feeling a bit jealous.
