I bought a pto generator, and now I need the transfer switch to tie it into my electrical panel. I got the plug and cable that goes from the genset to the panel, had to unhook it myself, and saw how his was wired. He had a Dayton manual transfer switch that is no longer available. I find several references to a GE switch on the forum, but haven't been able to find one. Lowes lists it on their website, but none of the stores say they can get it. Any ideas?

Howdy,

Congrats on the generator.

What size is it? There are lots of ways to tie it into your panel.

The gen I bought is a 20KW. I still haven't found a transfer switch. I want a 2 pole double throw switch that goes between the meter and the main disconnect panel. I have a 200 amp main bfkr that feeds a 100amp and a 125 amp that in turn feed the house and the outbldgs. This was all installed and inspected at the time of svc change. There is no more space in the main panel. I don't want an automatic switch, because I don't want to leave the pto gen hooked up permanently. I don't want to backfeed a breaker, because I want my wife to be able to hook this up in my absence.

Howdy,
The proper back-feed interlock is safe and easy enough to do. A DPDT switch accomplishes the same thing but involves your utility, permits, electrician.

You will need to make yourself a full power inlet plug for the generator. You can hard wire the cable set with the anderson connector on one end, and have them contained in a box where you hook it up. I use a cable set with plugs at each end. This way I leave the cable set with the generator, and plug it into my inlet.

Wife to do it?
order of events then, pull out tractor, pull out pto generator, hook onto tractor, hook up pto shaft, pull tractor and generator into place, (with interlock) turn main off, slide interlock, turn on generator breaker, make your power. :)

The back feed intlk system won't work on my disconnect panel. I have a 200 amp main brkr centered in the top of the panel, a 125 and a 100 below one on each side. I'd have to change the main disconnect panel to use the interlock. Still looking for a dpdt raintite switch.

OK - I found a GE 200amp dpdt gen disconnect switch at Home Depot. Free shipping, and they mached Lowes price. I'm looking at the trailer arrangement on the Tiger Power, and thinking that it wouled be a lot handier if I took it off the trailer and build a 3 point stand for it. Any comments?

i had a 25 kw generac pto generator, it was much easier to move and hook up on the trailer, i put a trailer jack with wheel on the hitch and could wheel it into position and hook up the pto shaft. i sold it when i realized my wife would never be able to hook up the pto shaft. so you may want to see if your wife can handle that chore first. it sure is easier to hook the trailer up that to hook up the three point to the generator for me at least. bought a winco trifuel that was on wheels and could be taken outside the garage, electric start hook up the cable and flip the breakers and it was on.

i added a gen-tran sub panel and moved the circuits i wanted to run over to the sub panel , the generator cable hooks right into the panel . this way my girls could handle the generator if i was not at home, then every time i tested the generator i made them come down and hook up, start, and transfer the power so they would be familiar with it. with the electric start, short cable run 25 ft, and easy hook up they were able to handle this easily i kept 5 gal can of gas in the garage which would run the generator for 5-8 hrs, if they needed more fuel they could go to the barn and put a couple of cans in the tractor bucket and bring them to the house.

I looked at all the options, I've been in the market for quite some time, and now that hurricane season is upon us, decided it was time. We have a new 45 hp diesel tractor that will turn the generator no problem, and buy installing the inline DPDT switch, it's impossible to backfeed and the 20KW will run the whole house. My wife has no problem with hooking up the driveshaft, we have the ones that have the pull collar on them, and that makes it much easier, if you keep everything lubed up. I just added the quick hitches on the 3 point, so am going to get used to that before I make a decision on the trailer. I guess I shouldn't try to reinvent the wheel.

If you can- you could do a trailer, 3 pt hookup stand combo. This way you can move via vehicle if needed or tractor 3 pt or still tow with tractor.

Eyecatcher,

Was it an actual "Tiger Power" PTO generator ?

Where di you find it? Was it used or new ?

I contacted DynaGen/DynaTech who I "thought" made the Tiger Power PTO Generators, but they said they don't make them.

Thanks for any info.

The manual I got with the unit lists DynaTech as the warranty provider. I did quite a bit of research on the internet previous to buying it, and it had all the qualifications I was looking for. Being a used unit, of course there was no warranty, but it works and looks great, so I'm happy.

Eyecatcher,

Thanks for the info.

I happened across those Tiger Power units on youtube and they looked like really nice units.

When I started to look around for pricing, one of the few places that indicated they had them was Messick's, but I don't know if that was old info or current.

I guess that Dyna-Tech company stopped making them for whatever reason.

Thanks again for the info.
