Hi everyone,
I notice that across the river in Arkansas when the rice farmers flood their fields, they sometimes pull a tractor up to a well head and attach a PTO shaft to a well pump
and go to town. I was wondering if those well pumps, PTO driven, are available on a small scale? I want to pump a well to replenish a pond and was wondering about different "relift" options.
Thanks in advance for your ideas.

How small of scale? What size down line is in the well?

It's a 2" groundwater well about 30 to 35 feet deep.

I'm gonna bump this one to the top because I have the same question. Here in Arkansas I have about 10-20 acres of pasture / layout ground that I'm wanting to establish some good deer food plots. Would love to plant soybeans but my deer numbers are so high that without irrigation I don't think the beans stand a chance at growing fast enough.

I was told by a buddy that a 3" well would probably be enough to irrigate the area. I haven't gotten anyone to give me a quote on actually digging the well but wanted to assess the cost of getting the water out of the ground once the well was dug.

So... I have the same question as the OP. Say 2", 3", 4" ? Well is small either way. I have a JD 4300 that should have plenty pto hp to get the job done.

Too Spiros and Arkvet,

The problem with the wells in question is the volume recoverable water in the casing,
the static water level, and the wells recovery rate in basic terms.

A two to three inch water well is a what is referred to as a packer
well which has a low capacity of withdrawl and recovery time.

it would need a either an air powered water pump or a jet pump
mounted on the casing collar to be effective as it is low producing well bore.

if desired you can purchase compressed air powered water pumps that can be run off a small
gasoline powered air compressor such as a twin tank nail gun rated air compressor
which would be more cost effective and not be detroyed by a run dry condition.

A turbine powered pump powered by a tractor would need a six inch plus diameter casing
and the well would have to provide hundreds of gallons of water per minute in order to be
cost effective.

A air powered water pump which uses a two pipe polyethylene pipe system using one pipe
for the air supply and the second for the water column would be very effective to move water for your use.

Leonz,

THANKS so much for the reply! That makes perfect sense. The only tractor driven PTO driven pumps I've ever been exposed to were ones that pulled water out of a river... so the volume of recoverable water was never an issue.

I think you've answered the question perfectly! Thanks sir!
