Try Cornhead grease first. Two tubes are about $10. It takes 15 min. to fill it up. Way easier than a seal. Cornhead grease thins more atr heat to act like the regular lube. I don't understand why it does not come from the factory with it.

-some- mowers DO spec a light weight grease.. most spec oil though..

Sorry, but I'm not real mechanical. What is cornhead grease & std NLGI 2? Maybe a brand name & viscosity rating or something that would help me pick the right thing from a Farm & Home Store.

Cornhead grease is almost liquid whereas NLGI 1 and 2 are thicker. I use the cheap Travelers grease sold by TSC. It is NLGI 1.5 at a little over a buck a tube. Checking the bearings is a good idea. They may have developed enuf play to cause the seal to leak. If the play is not excessive theres no harm and the grease will do you. If theres a lot of play they may hve been run dry and youll probably have to end up taking it apart. .... And I mean a lot by most standards. Tapered roller bearings on a stump jumper spindle are OK with a good bit of play. Seals just arent.

You can go the grease route or you can flip it over, remove the power bar or stumpjumper and unbolt the flange that holds the seal in it. Should be less than $10 at your mowers mfg or you can go to a place like napa or carquest and they should be able to match it up or a bearing store. Its really not that hard but you need a boom pole, Front loader or engine hoist or something to flip it over.

The other route is filling with grease. IF you have a cutter worth $200 or 300 i would fill with grease if your not mecanical, if its worth more i would either fix it myself or pay to have it done.

no mattr wat route the OP takes.. he needs to check the output shaft for play.

hate to see him start the mower up with a real bad bearing, and have it go out and throw a spinning death frisbee out the side of the mower 200' away into and thru the wall and living area of someones house trailer...

Soundguy I agree I had a bush hog knife crack at the bolt and knife went threw the side of the deck and flew about 1/8 of a mile anything in the way would of been damaged badly.

i've been lucky enough to never toss a blade or carrier.. I have on occasion launched a piece of debris a long ways though...
