Grapple questions about choice of root grapple

We don't need you to resolve this through beers. We need a head to head video!! That way we can have the beer and learn.

Hey now that sounds like fun! Although, it may be a little difficult to arrange a head to head, it's not too easy to get a tractor out to an island.

Although, if a 48" grapple really did cost $500, I'd buy one just for a true comparison, I'd even try my hardest to stay non biased. Maybe one of those 36" ones would work better though. By the way, what was this thread about again?

I'd even take it a step further and say there are times when I wish I had a wider grapple. On many occasions I've had to take a load of brush 1/4 mile to the burn pile. Even at 66" wide branches still fall out the sides. Or root raking a half acre area this spring. For my uses smaller is not better. It all depends...[/QUOTE]

Exactly, everyone's needs and uses are are different in some way and there are times that what works good for many uses is not what works so well for others. Without knowing ALL of a persons conditions, it really is pretty hard to say absolutely "this is what you need". ;)

Gee folks, I just did a search for "grapples" and what did I find? The "War and Peace" of threads on them. What did I learn? 1. People have as strong of an opinion regarding grapples as they do about sports, politics, or dogs. 2. There are a heck of a lot of considerations to make here. 3. I could probably do a lot more with a "real" grapple, be it four feet or ten feet across than I do with my bucket and small grapple, or backhoe and thumb, when it comes to clearing brush. 4. And finally, I'm still not sure what to buy.
But I must say I think this is the best novel about tractor parts that I've ever read!!!!!!:D

Since you've read my posts, you know that it simply depends on your primary uses. No matter what you get, it will do some jobs better, and some jobs worse, than the other choice.

Heck who knows, maybe your bucket grapple is the best choice :)

I'm glad you enjoyed our debate :)

Oh, and regarding your #1 statement... We actually have STRONGER opinions. Haha.

Today I drove to Houston to look at a grapple advertised on Craigslist. Said they were new, and I thought I understood that he had 60" grapples "and smaller ones" in stock. Unfortunately, he had only the 66" one available, (may have been a typo or my eyesight when I read the ad), but it was a name brand, and the price was great, but after looking at the 14 acres we added yesterday, I decided I'm going with a narrower grapple, to get to the brush between the big trees we want to save, but I'm (as usual) in a hurry. Not enough of a hurry that I bought the one I figured was way too big, or too heavy (the guy was really nice, and as I said, he had "name brand" equipment, including some skidsteer grapples that were very very heavy duty, but what he had was just not what I was looking for) so for once in my life, thanks to the information I got here I showed a little patience.
Although I must add that it required me to drive a pickup and EMPTY 16 foot flatbed back through Houston rush-hour traffic all the way across town and then 75 miles on further to home, with nothing to show for it.
(Except a ruined tire on the pickup, since as I remember from my mis-spent youth, Houston traffic still won't let you pull over to exit somewhere just because you have a flat tire, until they've "herded" you past three or four exits and made you drive on a rapidly deflating tire until it has "heat marks" on it).
But I do want to thank you folks here for the education I got in grapples and what I want to do with it, and keeping me from buying a $1000+ attachment that I don't think I would have been as happy with.
