Got no replies in the JD forum, so will try here.
530 hours on tractor.
After disking about 30 minutes the 3 pt arms won't lower the harrow unless I shut the engine down. Then it drops. I'm disking ~300 feet, lifting, turning around, then try to lower disk for next strip. It was doing this before I serviced the hydraulic system, and now still doing it after servicing....changed hyd oil, hyd filter, and cleaned inner metal screen.
Sure don't want to have to send it to the shop. I know if they go into the rockshaft area it's gonna be expensive just for labor, plus about $130 pickup/delivery.
Any advice? Thanks.

I have a 5303 and it does the same thing.

To fix it, there is a round valve under the seat. If you are in the seat, it is below your right leg. If you can do this when the rock arms are down, you won't make as big of a mess.

Put a 5 gal bucket under the tractor. Remove the two Allen bolts and pull the valve straight out.

Take the top of the valve apart , and there is a silver / chrome cylinder, clean this really good and I lighty sand it with 220 sandpaper. In side of the cylinder is a small disk. Clean that also.

That part is the check valve and it sticks. I have had to do this twice in 8 years

If you go to JDparts and look under valve, drop rate. You will see what Scrambled is talking about.

Make sure you get the 3PT and attachment on the ground or brace it up! It will come down when that valve is removed.

Thanks Steve and JD. I printed the parts diagram from the link. Will take a look tomorrow and see about pulling the valve.

I have a similar valve on my NH it controls the speed the arms drop. Ocasionally it will get bumped by my feet and get turned shuting off the flow of oil. I would check that first, before tearing it apart. The NH's are a knob that screws in, not sure JD's are the same, but something to check. I believe it just controls the drop not raise side of 3-pt.

Thanks, I'll check that, but the JD knob/handle is located far enough back so that it would be unlikely to get a foot on it.
