Good Afternoon, Chuck Vierthaler here:

I have 6 acres of lawn and enjoy it. Or use to enjoy it until this summer burnt the **** out of the lawn. Add to this I have an acre that was ripped up to put in a new drain tile field. That acre is bare dirt. I have been studying seeding and was unaware of the sophistication of machines. really do not understand Primary very well. My question is: Will an overseeder work on bare ground. Once it is planted I end up needing an overseeder anyway. Can I get by without a primary seeder and just purchase an Over seeder. Thinking about a Land Pride OS1548.

thank you in advance for you knowledge.

It depends on your wallet AND your ACTUAL NEED.

A ground drive or powered slit seeder is a big investment and
you have to decide on whether you want that FIRST COST expense.

A grass seed slit seeder is what is needed for turf but a wide slit seeder will work if the
slitter is adjustable.

AN overseeder will work on bare ground. The problem is it is one use implement and once you seed it your done for along time and the integral PTO or drop overseeders ground drive available are very expensive as far as purchase cost.

You will be money ahead by simply renting a motorised self propelled walk behind dethatcher
with a seeder box if you can rent one of those or simply spin cast the seed after you have cut
the slits in the ground and then spread the seed as the slits will hold more seed and prevent most
of the seed from blowing away.

I'm assuming you read this. OS15 Series Overseeders | Land Pride . If not, lots of good information on the specific unit you were thinking about. Probably the #1 consideration I'd have for using it in bare ground would be depth of placement. It's my understanding that turf seed should be planted no deeper than 1/4", and firmed into the seedbed. But this bit off the webpage answers that question.

"0"-1 1/2" Depth adjustment

Adjust depth for different seed types, soil conditions and moisture."

If you don't have unlimited $ resources, a used disc harrow with blades set to run straight followed by a used drop seeder/spreader will do the job. Ken Sweet

I have done several acres of new lawn with an overseeder. I just criss-cross the lawn to get really good coverage. I've always rented the 48" wide 3 point LandPride units with the PTO driven slitters. Way too expensive to buy, even used, unless lawn installation is a significant source of income.

I appreciate each of the answers and information given to me. I broke down and bought a 9 yr. old OS1548. I expect to keep my lawn green and sell lawn installation. Thank you for sharing.
