It is oriented nearer the bottom. Just like in the manual.

pretty common to have the oil check sump level on that type of gearbox BELOW the input shaft seal.
as the gear spins it will distribute oil..e tc..

Not only did they tap the threads at an angle and nearly strip them...they placed the plate upside down! Those Chinese slave labor kids...

The wires to the brushes are to provide exitation voltage to the rotor coil and the voltage comes from the AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator).
