pretty common to have the oil check sump level on that type of gearbox BELOW the input shaft seal.
as the gear spins it will distribute oil..e tc..
The wires to the brushes are to provide exitation voltage to the rotor coil and the voltage comes from the AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator).Regarding the wiring that comes off of the brushes at the end of the shaft...
Could those possible be associated with the 12V DC, 8.3A outlet located on the outlet panel? Just an after thought. Sorry to beat this dead horse.
