+1 on the oil finish. The film-forming finishes are vulnerable when you put the machine in use. Oil is more forgiving, if not as shiny.

Thank for the input on the sealent. I think I will use the linseed oil on it.

I have made many a tongue for equipment out of Spruce or tameric wood. It is light in weight but very strong and flexible . Just my opinion . . .John

I got me a 4x4 pressure treated for the tongue and an old shovel handle for the pitman arm. Works good for me. Cheap, too.

On my MF sickle bar mower, I found that Black Locust held up best. FWIW, the factory used Hard Maple. I've also seen square aluminum tubing as well.
