The shear pin broke on my plow. I've tried two more bolts but they instantly shear when the plow starts to dig. What do I put in there that won't break?

If I recall plow sheer bolts are of a higher strength than regular sheer bolts. I am not sure of the grade of bolt but would guess a grade 5 or 8.

First pic shows how it is broken. Second pic shows where the pin goes.

So I just need a hardened steel bolt?

Is that 5 marks on the bolt that is still there? My guess is you need a bold at least as tough as the one there- grade 5 I think. Just count the marks on the head of the bolt and buy one just like it that fits snugly without any play. Make sure that where the bolt passes through from one plate to the next- that there aren't any threads cut to weaken it. I like lock wasers and flat washers combined, but use the same setup as you have on the other bolt still in there.
Good luck.

Here's a diagram a single plow . Worksaver Standard Size One Bottom 14" Plow
I think its saying it takes a # 2. Don't take this wrong way but that plow looks almost home-made and from horse drawn moldboard. Do you know brand welds look good.
If it was mine I'd just keep putting in larger size shear bolts as long as I didn't damage 3 point arms. I'am guessing your useing for small food plots or gardens.

I don't know how many marks are on the bolt, I can't find it now. I don't know if the plow is homemade or not, I bought it at an auction. I am using it for a garden is all. I wanted a single plow because my soil is hard and very rocky. I will pick up some bolts from walmart tonight if they have them and I'll update tomorrow.

I put grade 5 in mine 3 marks on head. Five marks on head is grade 8. Weird huh? Grade 8 will probably get you in trouble. Better for it to shear than break else where, bolts are cheaper than shop time. Thanks hope I helped.

I actually found a grade 5 out in my garage and popped it in. Made it 15 feet and SNAP!

Dang. Well, I would double check your adjustments to be sure the plow is not in a bind. If it is set properly you may need a better bolt. What tractor are you using? I would hate for it to break something. From the pic ( I cannot enlarge) it looks like your plow is centered between wheels. Is it?
