Guys,
I finally put my old rotary cutter through one set of brush to many and she up and fell apart on me.... Last week, she lost a few pieces of support metal and I know I should have given her a break... .I should have bought a welder and fixed it (my Dad's is 150 miles away and I don't have the means to move my cutter there).

BUT, since I've had her a long time and she could still do the job, I kept working her.... Until the other night when I finally think she may have met her demise... The whole right side of the vertical support (the 3pt hitch attachment) came off (disconnected at the welds) the top of the cutter platform...
Needless to say, I luckilly caught it in time before a catastrophe with flying metal... I dragged her down the hill and laid her to rest with my trailer that needs restoring.

NOW, I need to get a new cutter (I may weld the old one but no time soon because I need to get a decent welder...not one of those cheapys ... and that means running the appropriate wiring). I'm looking to get a HD rotary cutter but I don't want to spend more than $1000. Any ideas???? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If you find one; let me know. You would be hard pressed to find one for $1500. They ain't cheap. You could go by an EL Cheapo to hold you over. Tractor Supply Center has King Kutter 5' rotary cutters on sale for $549.

Re: Can you buy a HD Rotary Cutter for under $1000

Check These Folks out. I recently bought a 6' Kodiak SD cutter from them for $595. I believe the MD model is not a great deal more than that. I suspect the HD is under a grand for a 6 footer.

Chief, you could probably drive there if you are in the market.

Note: They are a manufacturer, and their web site does not list the Kodiaks which they are simply a dealer for. As far as I can tell, they only list the items they actually build themselves.

They usually have a few Kodiak cutters in stock. Kodiaks are made nearby, and they can get them in a hurry.

Snowridge, not to seem stupid but I /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif can't seem to find any cutters in their product list... Thanks for the tip however, I'll take a closer look at the Kodiaks.

It looks like KK has a nice HD one that I'll work on getting a price for ... I'll let you know how much.

King Kutter makes a heavy duty rotary cutter but I think you will be over $1000 after chains and what not. They may be cheaper than I thought.

Hi Dave,

TSC should be able to order the KK unit for you... should be around $1000. or less...

I would classify KK "HD" as marketing talk... and only being a MD... I believe cuts 2" stuff...(rated by KK & also 60 hp gearbox)

Mfr. Rotary Cutter Ratings - Rule of thumb:
Standard Duty = 1" capacity
Medium Duty= 2" capacity
Heavy Duty= 4" capacity
(not everyone goes by this, some mfr. HD are actually MD... as in KingKutter's case, and some mfr. MD are actually HD.../forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif)

I wouldn't consider a true Heavy Duty unit unless you get up past 45 PTO hp... and that's on the low end of the totem pole... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Dave,
I think JohnMiller3 may be right.
I notice that the Bush Hog medium duty 286 series has a 110 HP gear box where the HD King Kutter has a 80 HP gear box.
Not sure about the other specs.

OK, I guess my post wasn't clear. They only list the items they themselves manufacture on their web site. They are also a dealer. The items they sell built by other manufacturers are not listed for some reason.

They sell quite a few lines beside their own brand, including Kodiak cutters and some really nice looking trailers for a good price. The main reason I posted about them is Chief's statement that he would like to know where to buy a HD cutter under a grand.

I wasn't sure if he was merely being rhetorical or not, but he is located near enough to them to drive over and pick something up if he really is in the market. I would think shipping to NY would put a real dent in any savings for you, unfortunately.

John (and all),
Thanks very much. I was looking at the KK the other night but was also wondering about the 2" cut being HD.... The unit does look sturdy though and I'll probably go take a closer look. THANKS GUYS!
