It originally came with the inline 6 that at some point was swapped out for the 305.

I got sides on the bed yesterday so I'm now ready to start catching chips!



Still not having much luck locating Vermeer yellow touch up paint. I guess I'll take a paint chip with me and see how close I can match it up with what they have a tsc.

Did quite a bit of chipping yesterday. The setup with the dump truck is working well. Here I am positioned for the first pile.



Closeup of the first pile. I made the mistake of stacking/pushing it together with the tractor grapple, so it was real hard to pull some of the pieces loose. I'll be doing less of that going forward.

Chips overshot a little bit, but nothing a brisk drive down the road didn't fix



Repositioned for the 2nd pile, which went a lot easier since it was hand stacked.



In all I chipped 3 truck loads in about 5 hours. Not too bad I think.

That setup reminds me a bit of ours. New deere tractor and an old GM truck, lol.



The chips flying over the cab is a problem we deal with too. At first I didn't think it was a problem, but they work their way down into the cowl vents, motor, etc and cause a general mess. We are experimenting now with some hoops over the bed and a heavy canvas tarp over the top.

I found mine on Craigslist for $5,500. Vermeer don't make the PTO models any longer, but my guess is that is was probably around $15k new. As for PTO needed, to be able to continuously chip a 9" hardwood log, I'd say you would need 80hp+ pto power. I'm running in 540E pto mode with my tractor, which keeps the engine rpms at 1700, and gives me maybe 55hp pto. When doing big logs, you have to manually stop the hydraulic feel for a few seconds when it starts to bog down. Once the cutting wheel regains speed, start feeding again. Not a big deal, but it does mean you have to "babysit" the larger logs.

Appreciate the advice. I have been thinking of adding a sheet of plywood as a roof over the front section of the dump bed and I have also found that by backing the truck up closer and pointing the shoot down more, it is less of an issue.
