Which rotary cutter do I need?

I'm getting a kubota mx5100 4x4 with loader I'm gonna be clearing brush and trees with the loader and bush hogging the small stuff that grows up in the pasture over the years vines,bryer bushes, saplings up to like 2"??

Congratulations on your acquisition.

Most manufacturers market light-, medium-, and heavy-duty cutters that differ in weight (deck thickness) and tractor HP requirements. For example, here are the single-spindle cutters from Woods: http://w ww.woodsequipment.com/rotaryCutters.aspx.


It looks like your tractor has 50 HP and a width of 69.7". IMO, you need at least a 6' medium-duty cutter. Your tractor should be able to handle a 7' medium-duty cutter.

That 69.7 is probably for ag tires, with R4's it would be wider.

Since you're in Tx look up Modern Ag equipment. I have a private dealer not far from me that sells there stuff. They are produced in Tx and from what I have seen they make some nice looking cutters. They produce one of the nicest looking batwings I have ever seen.

I run a 6ft medium duty woods with ease on my mx5100. I've cut. Stuff that was over hood with ease running at 540pto. I had originally ordered a 7ft but i trailer it a lot and i don't think it would have fit very well.

Well we didn't get the kubota so I'm still looking for a tractor between 40-55 hp so even at that I think a 6ft would work..

I use an RCF2772 with my MX5100. Seems like a good match.

I've been tearing up bush hogs for 45 years. Currently have a Hardee heavy duty 7 ft. on my 55hp JD 2510Diesel. One tough machine. Bought it in 1989. Has a very tough gearbox and blades mounted on a circular stump-jumper. Only replaced the blades in all these years. Highly recommend it. My advice for a cutter that will be used to cut heavy brush is one the same width as the tractor with a stump-jumper and heavy-gauge constuction. The extra bucks spent on the original investment will more than pay for repairs on a "medium duty" machine. Also... PTO speed on your tractor is not necessary for most bush-hog work. Run the engine only as fast as needed to cut what you are cutting. Your mower will appreciate it and so will fuel consumption.

i'd skip 7' cutters and go with 6' or 8' dual spindle.. etc.. 8' tucks up nice and close in the back

I've got the same tractor and bought a 6' Bush Hog. It's just a bit narrower than my R4 tire width which I don't find to be an issue. Bush hog makes a tough machine IMO. I've cut areas that were taller than the hood of the tractor (wild roses, blackberries, etc.) and cut saplings up to 2" with no issues. I do slow down when cutting the saplings. I think it's a good combination.
