Catastrophic hydraulic top link failure

/ Catastrophic hydraulic top link failure #21
Anyone got ideas for how to prevent a similar failure? Is it a good idea to lock the 3 point up with the knob under seat when transporting heavy implements over long and bumpy distances? What about adding chains or a ratchet strap between the tractor and implement somehow to "help" the top link handle the load + bumps/shocks?

John,
Next failure might be a side link failure, not a common problem to be too concerned about. If you have a bumpy road to traverse I would sugest slowing down for the potholes.
In most cases where the road is rough I usually trailer the tractors to minimize damage.

Well guys, it was one of my top links. It was a cat 2 end, but not heavy duty. I have since gone to all heavy duty ends on the 3' cylinders and doubt that this will happen again. The std cat 2 ends are just not strong enough to take any additional load stresses such as the bouncing that was apparently going on. I was notified of this failure this morning and the replacement is done, paint is drying and will be shipped out tomorrow. Oh, and all with no questions asked, period. I don't want any failures out there and this is CLEARLY A FAILURE. :ashamed:

Brian - what a great response, though I know it pained you that you had to do so (and that it occurred at all). Thanks for being a standup guy running a standup business. Makes me even happier I ordered a toplink from you, and can't wait to get it.

Not a big deal to weld on a new one, just run it all the way out and cover the whole rod with wet rags to keep the seals cool and the rod spatter free.

thats what id do

Edit: looks like Mtn stepped up. Thats an even better solution.

Oh jeez
Oh no
Oh gosh

Will mine do that!!!!
Can I get a refund?

Just joking.

But seriously, Brian was great to deal with. I had what seems like a hundred emails w/ him going back and forth so he could make sure I got just what I wanted/needed.
Can't wait for my TnT to show up.
Thanks for being a stand up guy.

Yours my friend will have the big ends to start with. Someone mentioned pot metal. :confused2: My guess is if it says forged on it and you can weld it, then it most likely isn't pot metal. ;)

That IS an awesome response. Especially considering he didn't point you out as the seller, even though he had the opportunity. Way to man up and rectify the situation, then publicly admit the fault. I know where I will be going for a tnt if I ever get around to getting the hydraulics plumbed.

Brian, I'm with the other posters here. Your response is exactly what is missing in much of today's business world. A hydraulic top link has been on my list of "tools" that I wanted for the JD 3720 for some time. Your product just jumped to the top of the list of suppliers. We will be in touch.

I do work for a local farm and have welded new eyelets on cylinders either because they wore out or got damaged. In some cases I machined larger ones to make them stand the abuse the operators could give them. Never had an issue with them after so Aaron is giving you good advice.
