5\' Agri Bush Hog- 1st bush hog............Help!

Looking for some pointers. (stupid) question #1:

1. How do you attach the drive shaft to the PTO shaft?
2. What's next?
3. Initial adjustments?

Don't have much to mow- side of 1/4 mile road, some trails, new garden patch.

Is AGRI pretty cheap stuff. I wasn't going for HD since I don't have much to do. Brush is small stuff.

Thanks fellas. Please be patient! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

1. How do you attach the drive shaft to the PTO shaft?
Get some multipurpose grease and smear it on the sliding part of the shaft and the pto splines. Assemble the two pieces of the shaft and then attach the spline end to the pto. Usually there is a ring that you pull or push to enable the shaft to slide onto the pto - when it's in place make sure it's locked to the pto shaft by pulling/pushing the shaft. You don't want it coming off during operation. You want to make sure your 3ph is adjusted to allow the cutter to move enough to follow the terrain without binding the pto shaft or the 3ph draft arms and top link. Your tractor manual should tell you how to do this. Also, you want to make sure you can turn without anything touching your rear tires.

With the tractor and cutter on level ground make sure the cutter is adjusted to the height you want.

Above.

1. Your PTO shaft may have a collar type lock or it may have a spring loaded pin that you have to push in. If you can turn the tractor PTO shaft by hand, it is easy to align the splines. Just hold the PTO shaft against the tractor shaft and turn the tractor shaft until you feel it start to slip on. Then press the pin or pull the collar and slide the PTO on the tractor shaft. If you can't turn the tractor shaft, then you can turn the PTO drive shaft slowly until it slides on. A little harder to turn, but not too difficult.
2. Move to level ground. Look at the deck side to side. Is it level? If not, one of your lift arms should be adjustable so that you can shorten/lengthen it to get the deck level.
3. Decide how high you want to cut your grass. Raise the front of the deck to the height you want. Then look at the deck, front to back. Is it level? You want the front to be level or slightly lower than the back. You may have to adjust the rear wheel to do this.
4. Go mow. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If there is a ditch on the side of the road please be very careful not to get too close to it. Wear your seatbelt and have your ROPS in the upright position.

Since you're new to the tractor, I'm going to tell you the obvious. MAKE SURE THE TRACTOR IS OFF AND THE KEY IS IN YOUR POCKET BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING WITH THE PTO. PTO's have killed and maimed thousands of people, BE CAREFUL.
