Just picked up an old beater 6' Ford 907 flail mower to use with my NH TC33D. Won't see much use just mowing along the edges of a dirt road through the tater fields. Tried it with a finish mower and that was a bad idea because of rough ground. Gave $500 for it which seems cheap in today's market. It had new blades, belt, and roller bearings installed last summer then traded in to a small equipment dealer in OH. It has a nasty crack in the middle of what I'd call the main housing - Ford calls it the frame. Crack has been reinforced and welded so I'm not too worried about it. I do wonder how they managed to damage it like that. It's not much to look at but I think it will do the job. I ran one many many years ago when I was a state park ranger. It did a good job and you could run over most anything with it.

What is Flail Mower Nation? Any and all advice appreciated. Did a screen capture on a ad brochure and downloaded a parts catalog from NH for $10 will be happy to share what little info I have.

Thanks

Good Morning Lencamp,

I want to welcome you as the newest member of
the Flail Mower Nation as you now own the best
type of mower in our collective opinions.

Being a member of the Flail Mower Nation does not require
the payment of annual dues, passport etc., we just love our flail mowers
and how they cut the grass and brush and how safe they are to use around
roadsides and pedestrians both two legged and four legged.

About the welded crack on your flail mower; is it located on the cross tube that is part
of the reinforcement for the entire fully welded frame? If you could upload an image
that would be very helpful.

The other question I have is whether your Ford 907 has the removable rear door to
permit it tomow heavy brush more effectively where the clippings are quickly ejected
out of the flail mower?

You can purchase replacement parts for your mower from Clean Cutter Tiller Blades and Flail-Master - Mower Replacement Parts, Commercial Riding Mower Parts, Rotary Cutter Parts, Blade grinders, Trimmer Line, Mowing Accessories - Flail Master - Flailmaster -

Happy Mowing

Only 17,883 mowers to go.

Thanks leonz. Here's a couple pics of the old brute. You can see the crack under the gearbox. Welding looks kinda scabby so I'm going to run some bolts through it in the spring. Thought I'd bolt a plate over the crack with 1/4-20 button heads which should allow clearance for the blades. The rear guard is missing and I may fabricate something simple if need be - is that the rear door you mentioned?

Just wondering if anyone else had seen similar damage?

If I had $2K burning a hole in my pocket I would have bought a used Alamo. I wanted a 6' centered flail cheap that was usable and had parts available. BTW Flail-Master has very little for the 907 but there are other sources including NH. Not looking to win any beauty contests just mow some weeds beside the road a couple times during the summer.

Thanks again

Greetings,

You do not have a rear discharge door on your Ford 907 flail mower
apparently :^(( Oh well.

Now as to the linear crack it looks like they spliced two pieces of steel
together to finish the build on this one.

For the fix;

you should or could locate metal shop that can roll and form a slug of curved steel sheet to
conform to the angle of the flail mower hood. you can buy a pattern finding tool
that follows the curve exactly-if you have a wood shop you may already have one to use.

You could also gas weld the crack together which would work very well too after
you clean out the rust.

Youcould also layer several pieces of thick sheet metal over and under the crack
then gas weld the edges.

getting the square holes is another issue and requires a
punch press that can do this for you.

Happy New Year

Hello Mike,

First I want to welcome you as the newest member
of the Flail Mower Nation.

About your Ford 907 Flail Mower;

I believe you mean that you have the scoop knives
for the 28 mounting stations/knive holders.

Each Flail Mower Rotor is typically designed to handle either a scoop knive,
hammer knive or a Y blade 2 knive set that has two edges.

Youe scoop knives may simply need to be sharpened using wet wheel knive
grinder to bring the edge back to the proper angle which I believe is 25 degrees-
saying that it is easy to check the angle with a protractor to get the correct angle to be sure.

The scoop knives allow the end user to mow light brush and good sod as well.

You also may have to slow down a bit with your travel speed to get a more clean cut
rather than a waffled pattern. you may also wish to mow at right angles going first
north-south then east-west to obtain a better turf look.

The question of the rotor change can be accomplished but a replacement rotor will run
into a bit of money if you want the Y blade sets for a finish mower rotor which will give
you a great lawn and if I remember correctly you can add dethatching blades to remove
the dead grass and you will need lawn sweeper to pick up the dead thatch in the lawn.

I purchased a WEN BRAND wet well knive grinder from Northern tool 30 plus years ago
and I still have it to sharpen blades when needed.

The great thing about the wet well knive grinder is that it will not ruin the temper of the
scoop knives too.

NOW; about the scoop knives you can purchase hardened ones to replace the ones on the
flail mower if desired at some point.

leonz

WHOOPSIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EDIT: Mike I just went through a couple of my old threads and you can change the scoop knive to the Y Pair of knives.

The issue is getting the right side slicer to have the correct width of cut to equal the width of each scoop knive. DO this by checing the Catalogs to compare the width of the Side slice knive pairs to the scoop knives you have mounted on the flail mower.

Hey Thanks for the info I am new to the Fail side but love it. Maybe i was going to fast when mowing it would let some standing up i have Bermuda grass and got the flail in the fall so i wasn't able to check it out. i want the golf course look if i changed over to the Y pair blades would it accomplish this? next time i will try going slower. if you or anyone else has a few mins can you tell me which blade to get that will work? i am not sure if it has to be the same width or just a hair wider

Thanks again

Leons ive got a question for you. I want to know if a flail mower with gage wheels is suppost to also have the roller on it or not... ive seen new flails with gage wheels only and ive seen pictures of old Alimo flails with the wheels and the roller in place. wich is the right way.

Leon i've got a question for you.

I want to know if a flail mower with gauge wheels is supposed
to also have the roller on on not... I've seen new flail with gauge
wheels only and I've seen pictures of old Alamo flails with the
wheels and the roller in place. which is the wright way?

Hey 8404 how yall doin?

The rear roller has to be there other wise you
are risking a lot of damage to the welds and
the side slicers and hangers if it has them
as well as premature bearing failure because it
does 2 jobs, supporting the mower and preventing
the mower from flexing as the weldments will want
to push out if the rear roller is gone due to the mowers
weight.

If the new mower has no rear roller I would ask if it
has a square tube inside the mower shroud-
most likely not as a square tube for bracing/strenthening
the shroud will not permit the blades to pass in the orbit
they are supposed to follow.
(I would want to see the construction/welds on this mower before I spent any money on it 8404)

A flailmower needs the rear roller to prevent scalping
and to add strength back to the mower frame and shroud
to keep it from racking and twisting the shroud
and then damaging the main bearings.

With the rear roller gone the mower will want to
twist more as it is being towed by the tractor and
the lower links will allow it to twist/rack unless
the hydraulics are locked and the down pressure
force from the weight of the tractor is pushing on
the lower links and then the mower frame.

You will not go wrong with a second set of wheels in front of your mower 8404 and it will aid your mowing. You can always afjust the hieght of cut if you use washers to set the caster height.

If I remember correctly you bought your flail mower from the everything attachement folks and you thought it was scalping too too much an you were very happy with addition of the
twin casters in the rear to add stability to the mower.

The best things about keeping the mower stable at all times with casters is when you are dealing with ground you are unfamiliar where you can avoid damaging the rotor or knives by keeping it level.

I know of one manufacturer that has a towed motorised model that uses 4 gauge wheels, 2 in front and 2 in the rear within the width of the cut that are adjusted with two screw cranks and its a beautiful design to keep the mower out of harms way and still give a good rough cut.

Hello again Mike,

If you change to the side slicers it
will give you the look of a golf course
fairway or green depeding on how
good your turf is.

The problem may be that you do not have enough knives to give it a
very smooth cut that will look like a golf green- a fairway yes But A golf
green cut will require more passes at right angles too.

You have to be sure the pair of side slicers will be the EXACT
WIDTH of cut the scoop knives cutting edge has as the mower
may leave rooster tails of uncut grass.

AND you must be sure the 2 side slicers that make up the Y are the
same exact length as the scoop knive with the same type of hanger hole
with either a slotted mounting hole or a punched hole THE SAME SIZE.
