Ford 907 Flail Mower

Just picked up an old beater 6' Ford 907 flail mower to use with my NH TC33D. Won't see much use just mowing along the edges of a dirt road through the tater fields. Tried it with a finish mower and that was a bad idea because of rough ground. Gave $500 for it which seems cheap in today's market. It had new blades, belt, and roller bearings installed last summer then traded in to a small equipment dealer in OH. It has a nasty crack in the middle of what I'd call the main housing - Ford calls it the frame. Crack has been reinforced and welded so I'm not too worried about it. I do wonder how they managed to damage it like that. It's not much to look at but I think it will do the job. I ran one many many years ago when I was a state park ranger. It did a good job and you could run over most anything with it.

What is Flail Mower Nation? Any and all advice appreciated. Did a screen capture on a ad brochure and downloaded a parts catalog from NH for $10 will be happy to share what little info I have.

About the welded crack on your flail mower; is it located on the cross tube that is part
of the reinforcement for the entire fully welded frame?If you could upload an image
that would be very helpful.

The other question I have is whether your Ford 907 has the removable rear door to
permit it tomow heavy brush more effectively where the clippings are quickly ejected
out of the flail mower?

Thanks leonz. Here's a couple pics of the old brute. You can see the crack under the gearbox. Welding looks kinda scabby so I'm going to run some bolts through it in the spring. Thought I'd bolt a plate over the crack with 1/4-20 button heads which should allow clearance for the blades. The rear guard is missing and I may fabricate something simple if need be - is that the rear door you mentioned?

Just wondering if anyone else had seen similar damage?

If I had $2K burning a hole in my pocket I would have bought a used Alamo. I wanted a 6' centered flail cheap that was usable and had parts available. BTW Flail-Master has very little for the 907 but there are other sources including NH. Not looking to win any beauty contests just mow some weeds beside the road a couple times during the summer.

You do not have a rear discharge door on your Ford 907 flail mower
apparently :^(( Oh well.

Now as to the linear crack it looks like they spliced two pieces of steel
together to finish the build on this one.


For the fix;

you should or could locate metal shop that can roll and form a slug of curved steel sheet to
conform to the angle of the flail mower hood. you can buy a pattern finding tool
that follows the curve exactly-if you have a wood shop you may already have one to use.

You could also gas weld the crack together which would work very well too after
you clean out the rust.

Youcould also layer several pieces of thick sheet metal over and under the crack
then gas weld the edges.



getting the square holes is another issue and requires a
punch press that can do this for you.
