Posthole Digger Auger Bit for Post Hole Digger

Greetings Members,

We have an old Bush Hog post hole digger that is in need of a new auger tip and carbides. I priced these through a Bush Hog dealer and they are almost $200.00 with shipping. Does it make sense just to buy a complete auger assembly from an after market source? If so do you have any suggestions? It is going to be getting some good use this coming year digging post holes. We use this auger on a JD 950.

Also, I noticed that most manufactures make down pressure cylinders. Anyone use one? Seems like it would make a huge difference.

Doesn't sound bad for a single flight bit, probably cant get a hd double fight for that amount. Down pressure kits work so long as the operator pays attention and doesnt run an auger bit into the ground just like you would a wood screw, then you are .... well...

Don't know what type of soil you have.
Don't sound bad to me either espeicially since you said with shipping. If PHD unit was working fine I would buy auger, empty and refill to correct level with fresh fluid(80/90),grease my fittings and make sure I was running it with protectant shields on pto shafts. Just my :2cents:

Down pressure units work great. :thumbsup: I don't think that you will find anyone that has one that is unhappy with theirs. I know that for me, what use to be a multi day job with the PHD, between digging, putting water in the hole, letting it soak in and doing that over and over again for hours if not days to digging the hole in less than 2 minutes. I kid you not, less than 2 minutes. :cool2: I am just a weekender, so when I go to do something, I need to get it done then, not in 2 or 3 days. After fighting 3-16" dia holes one weekend was when I decided that I needed a down pressure kit. Got it and have not had a problem digging a hole since.

I bought this one from TSC and punched 54 holes this weekend, going full length of auger deep. I am drilling in very hard clay and you have to be careful or it will drill down and get hung up.I do not have down pressure, couple of holes I had to pull forward some and back up some to get it to bite and dig. Ground is so hard/dry here that once the PTO starts to bindup, kill the PTO and lift, then engage PTO and go again. The bit did very good I thought.
The cutting edge has a split in it and when root gets wedged in it, you have to pull it out and it will go back to digging. Still have 100 plus holes to go, but so far I am happy with it. Now if we could just get some rain it would be easier digging

I also want to add that I did talk to EA and was very interested in thiers. My only reason for not going that route was shipping time constraints to fit my schedule. They were top notch in answering my questions and the shipping to south Tx was cheap.
