Default Bush Hog 2615 Legend questions

    Good evening guys!

I bought a 02' model Bush Hog Squealer SQ840 in the spring of 2009. It's a 7 foot, 3 pt mount rotary cutter and has been tough as nails. I bought it from a guy who used it more like a finish mower, he actually sold it to buy a finish mower. I certainly use it for its intended purpose around the farm and have logged many, many hours with it.

Over the summer, a friend loaned me his new 15' Land Pride batwing rotary cutter. He warned it would ruin me and well......it did. It saved me considerable time and allowed me to trim much closed under tree canopies and closer to the lake.

While I'm keeping my SQ840, I've been considering buying a 15' batwing for myself and have been looking at several used BH 2615 Legends. I have a few questions for anyone who may have some insight:

    1. Ads often refer to "new style gear boxes". Based on looking through several ads in print and on-line, these "new style" gear boxes all appear to be more square in shape. It seems like the round shaped gear boxes no one really says anything about. Are the round gear boxes the "old style" and were they more prone to problems than the "newer" design?

    2. Any ideas on what years the 2615L was produced? The tags on the deck will have a serial number and such but nothing real concrete as to a build date or model year. I even called BH about one particulare 2615L to run the serial number by them and after getting passed around several times, my call landed at their parts department. I ran the serial number by him and he gave me a range of two years that the BH could have been made in.

    3. Any owner input on this model?

I'm also looking at some Woods and Land Prides. It just seems there is an abundance of 2615L's on tractorhouse and fastline. I'd love to pick one up before spring if possible. I can go back to my seven footer, but man, that 15' is the trick. When I turn around, you can tell you're getting something done. With my SQ840, it's doing it's job, but it's just covering my tracks.

Thanks guys, have a great weekend!

    Something else to consider.
1 There is more than one driveshaft option. You want the one the is designed for tightest turn angle.
2 RPM you can get 540 or 1000 RPM PTO speeds.

    Thanks Zebrafive.

I'm definitely going to look for a batwing with CV joints over regular U-joints if possible.

My tractor is 540 rpm PTO. Seems in this particular model that while I'm finding several 540's, I'm finding more 1,000's.

    Thanks again.

I wonder if there is a HP limit for 540rpm PTO splines, hence the move to 1000rpm PTOs

Went by a dealer last night. They had 6 brand new Woods BX180's and they were all 540. To me, it seemed like 540 was popular, then 1000 came along and now 540 is coming back around.....who knows?
