I used a rented skid steer mounted hydraulic PHD to dig 16" diameter holes for the pole barn and barely broke a sweat. For $120 for a weekend - I will NEVER use another 2-man auger again. If you don't have a skid steer, rent one for the job. You will not believe how nice it is to position a PHD using a skid steer instead of a tractor - if you are dealing with precise placement it will save you mountains of time.

FYI, This is the same one I use on my 9.9 GPM tractor. So they do make units for smaller GPM tractors.
The Land Pride HD25 Series Post Hole Diggers are hydraulically driven and accommodate augers ranging from 6" to 24" in diameter. They are available with a bolt-on mount for mounting to the side of a bucket on a tractor front-end loader or with a boom for mounting to a category 1 or 2 three-point hitch. The HD25 series requires a hydraulic flow system capable of producing 5 to 12 GPM

I bought the County Line PHD with a 9" auger and have had no problems using it in my extremely rocky soil. Granted it is sandstone but mine will dig to China. I've dug dozens of holes and have yet to break a shear bolt. A couple of the photos show it with the optional weight kit (four 45 pound plates) but I don't use those often. I am careful to auger at idle speed and only dig a little at a time before coming back out of the hole. If you get carried away and let it screw itself into the ground you will need a 60" Ridgid pipe wrench to back the auger out. This is frequently accompanied by much cussing.

PS I'm told that if you bored a hole straight through the earth from any point in the USA you would not come out in China. What's up with the dude who invented that old saying?
