For some reason the search engine on TractorByNet is difficult for me to use. I know there are a ton of box blade related threads and I read all that I could find. Does anyone else find the search "painful" or is it just me?

However, I ask anyhow......

I have a John Deere 4105 and want to get a box blade for the spring. I think it will be very useful for my fields, stone driveway, and future woods roads. The tractor is 40 hp with R4 tires making it about 66" wide. I don't really have a budget. I don't want to buy things twice and I don't want to waste money. I like everything attachments and their videos but that is all I really researched so far.

Questions - how wide should I go and what do y'all suggest for brands Etc, specifically for my tractor and needs.

Thanks.

72" wide and nothing less than 800lbs. Do you have any rear remotes? If you do, you might want to consider a hydraulic top link and or a hydraulic side link. They really let you make full use of a box blade and you will need that for those future woods roads. ;)

Just my :2cents:

I happen to know of someone who sells those. :)

I also agree with everything he said.

I'd say at least as wide as your tractor. I use an over sized one for my tractor on gravel and snow as it doesn't require much power yet for dirt work you will likely be run full throttle for a tractor width model so don't go too wide. Kind of balance between your specific needs.

For weight/quality, heavier is better but more money. Have you ever heard anyone say they wish they'd bought a lighter duty unit? Again balance, if your not a commercial/ daily user go mid line for weight and quality. the TSC box blade likely won't hold up to 40hp. Jmho.
Good luck and happy shopping.

I'm using a TSC 72" Box blade and its held up fine for the 600 feet of driveway I've used it on. I've been completely ripping up the drives then spreading new gravel.

I've read a lot of box blade threads on TBN, the BBs that don't hold up are the ones that the operator admits they were going too fast or butting it into something the BB wasn't designed to move.

72".... a light duty BB will hold up fine under normal use. Only downside is they are short on weight, but thats easy to add and a lot less expensive than buying the weight upfront.

You could probably pull a 72 inch. I had a 72 on my JD 3038e and it was just a bit more than it's weight would handle. I downsized to a 60 inch and it's perfect. The tractor would pull the bigger BB on ordinary gravel and such, but not up my steep hills. If you don't have to grade a steep slope, you should have no problems with the 6 footer.

By the way, the BB is really of little use for snow. The box fills immediately and nothing much happens. You can run it in reverse as a push blade, but it is hard to steer and you are prone to hitting things that can bend supports on the BB. I speak from experience - 72 inch on a 68 hp JD.

Buzzard,
Heres the three best choices i could come up with for your tractor.

Good, EA's 72" Severe Extreme duty boxblade

Better, Cammond 2C2 66"

Best, Woods Gannon HD2465LB 66"

Hope this helps and gives you a range of pricing to work with, i have to say the Gannon would be my choice. i don't recommend buying a light boxblade and adding weight to it. The extra weight should be part of the boxblade structure for strength.

How's the driveway repair biz going?

I have a Dirt Dog 72" rollover, it is heavy, 800 + lbs. and works great. It is a manual box as I could not justify the expense of a hydraulic one. More weight is definitely better. And, like the others match your implement to the tractor or you will most likely bend or break something.

I agree with you about the search engine here. What I have found easy is to do a google search for what Im looking for and scroll down through the Tractorbynet posts that google finds. It seems it finds the posts Im looking for easier and quicker.
