JD 4300 HST 4X4
I have been a lurker on this forum for several years and love the site. Thanks for the knowledge you guys bring.

I am looking at getting a rototiller this spring. I have a JD4300 32HP tractor, with HST trans. I belive it is rated for 25.5HP at the PTO. The spec for the rear width of the tractor is 68", However my tires are set on the wide position so it may be an inch or two wider than that (have not taken a ruler out to measure).

I am looking for something around $2K or under and am also trying to determine whether I go with the forward or counter rotation. Ideally, I like the Landpride RTA/RTR 2064 series, but those are pricing out a bit more than is currently in the budget. I like this as the tiller can be offset to cover at least one complete wheel track.

The local farm store has the KKII 72" tiller priced new at $1750, which I believe it a good price. However, I am concerned that it may be a bit too big for the tractor. I don't mind going slow if that is what it would take, but also don't want to stress the tractor if I don't have to. The 60" KKII would also seem like a logical choice, but I am concerned as it does not appear that it can be offset so it would not cover the entire wheel tracks.

Any tiller advice would be greatly appreciated. I will likley only be tilling a few acres per year. My soil is rocky in some areas with Softball sized rocks, and maybe some about twice that size.

Thanks Again

Sincerely

Steve

My Brother-in-law has been using the KKII 72" on his JD 790 for years with no problems. And you wouldn't believe the field he tilled with it. It was filled with rocks like yours.

But I would suggest you pick up a middlebuster and run it first, picking out the bigger rocks as you go.

Your tractor will handle that with no problem. That's the beauty of HST,infinate speed control.Mine is forward rotation Bush-Hog branded tiller and has been great. The KK tiller get good reviews here.Make sure it has a slip clutch and service EVERY year.If you have a lot of rock..leave the discharge flap wide open.I do ten acres a year in the rock strewn North east.

KK good tiller for a good price. Though landpride makes nice stuff too. 72" Size should be ok you do want to cover your tracks if you can. The Bush Hog model I use also can be offset to one side if needed. Can be usefull if your tilling close to building especially running a loader. Since you say have a lot of rocks I suggest you get a slip clutch so if a rock gets caught between the tines all you need to do is clear the jam and your back on your way without having to replace shear pins. As for counter rotating thats not so important on tractor mounted tillers as it is walk behind models. Seldom will you experience the tiller try to force the tractor foward not that not cant happen but with a walk behind tiller it could easily pull right out of your hands.

I am glad to hear that the 72" should be doable as I would rather have one that covers my tracks. I am gonna keep shopping Craigslist for a bit to see if any deals come up, but it sounds like the $1750 at Family Home & Farm is a pretty good price for a new unit with a Slip Clutch for a KKII 72" I have a 72" KK Brush Hog and have not had any issues with that in the 10+ years I have owned it.

If you go with the Land Pride RTR 2064 you will be okay. But if you jump up to a 72" RTR you may be disappointed. The rtr uses a lot more horse power than a forward rotation tiller and they don't deal with rocks as well as a forward rotation tiller does. Another "Con" for the RTR is they don't incorporate thick loose mulch like straw. They just push it forward. Where RTR's shine is in hard ground and sod.
