Hello all,

I found an old JD 2 bottom plow in the corner of my farm (similar to the one in the picture here) from the previous owner. From my initial inspection, it looks OK, nothing broken. I am interested in use it to plow my land to grow some vegetables in the Spring. I am new to all this.

Questions:
1. How do you operate this plow? I can see the hitch to the tractor but what do I do with those handles and crank?
2. I plan to pull it with my MF1533. Will this work? Or should I get the a 3pt plow?
3. When is a good time to plow for a Spring planting? (April-May)

Any instruction is appreciated.

Thanks,

JamesNW,

Your Massey should have no problem once you get the plow properly setup for your tractor. The setup is easier if you had a manual. Is there a make/model of your plow that you can provide. Others here at TBN may have one like yours and have more expierence on that pull type plow. I have a 3x16 3pt hookup but the tracking and setup concept are similar.

You will be setting it up:
1. To follow the tractor straight.
2. then to get the right wheel of the plow to track in the furrow.

The long handle lever is used to adjust the wheels which inturn sets the depth of plowing. The multi holes on the hitch are there to adjust the tracking of your plow to your specific tractor. Also the distance from the inside Right tractor tire to the center of the draw bar is needed for adjusting the plow hitch. This offset is needed to have the front moulboard cover your furrow as you plow. As you can see there is alot of adjustments to initially setup a plow. But once a plow is setup correctly it'll be easier on the tractor. Let's see if others can help more than I have.

To lower the plow and raise it in and out of the ground you will need to tie a rope to the part circle in red. One pull it will drop another pull it will raise. You need to be in motion to do this mind you.

They are good plow but require lots of room to get turned around.

Here's a short video that illustrates Mike's points.

I don't think that is a manual raise/lower plow. Unless I am mistaken he needs a two way hydraulic cylinder to raise and lower the plow. A picture of the other side of the plow would confirm this. I learned to plow with a 2 x 16" John Deere manual plow behind a 1952 John Deere B. The first year I didn't have enough arm strength to "pop" it hard enough to get it out of the ground. Dad would lead with the Super MTA with it's IH 3 x 16" and I would follow with the B. At the end of the field Dad would wait for me and snap the rope to get the plow out of the ground.

That is a model 44H plow . What is circled in red is one end where the hyd. cyl . connects , it is not a trip plow . Do you see the large L shaped bracket at the front of the plow , that is the static end of the cylinder , the other end , in red is the piston end of the cylinder . There is no clutch on the land wheel . You need a 1.5 X 8 stroke cylinder and you will be in business .

Does the MF1533 have aux hydraulics available?

I don't see a rope-operated trip clutch on this plow. But there are fittings on your plow for a hydraulic ram (cylinder). Check the Surplus Center website for reasonably priced units and a giant selection of sizes. I've installed a ram from SC on my Minneapolis Moline P3-6 grain drill to raise and lower the disc openers and also installed a pair of SC rams on my home built hay bale squeeze.
You'll need a pair of rear mounted remote hydraulic lines on your tractor to operate this plow.

Good luck.

You don't show the front hitch point of this plow but near the hitch point I do see a heavy spring so there is likely a front dog that drops into a plow clevis you will need to buy. The dog drops into the Levi's and if you hit a rock or other obstruction, the dog will trip popping out of the clevis and reducing possible damage. I've only used pull type plows with a trip rope that I hooked to the tractor with a bent piece of wire so when the tractor breaks free, the trip rope pulls out f the wire. What append on these hydraulic plows - do the hoses just pull out of the QD's? My nephew has a 6 bottom pull type but it as individual trip bottoms. I've never seen a pull type hydraulic lift with trip hitch before.

Sorry for the late reply.

The MF1533 does not have Aux hydraulic. I was thinking about adding it, but still looking for instruction. :)

The Video show how pop the plow out is very helpful. I tried it but only succeed 1/5 times. Still learning this stuff.

Thx,
