Allis Chalmers 3-point hitch questions

Hello,
I have just recently purchased my 1st tractor, an AC D14. I bought a 3-point hitch, and bush hog with the tractor. The bush hog attaches by the pin hitch and lower links, I have not attached the 3-point hitch yet. The tractor does not have an upper link arm on it, but there is a place where I believe an upper link should go. My question is, do I attach an upper link arm to the tractor and run it to the bush hog or do I attach chains to the upper hydraulic arms or the suspected place where the upper link arm would attach and then attach the chains to the bush hog? I assume I will need an upper link arm for the 3-point hitch, but just wondering on the bush hog. I will be cutting some very thick underbrush/small trees with this tractor and bush hog. Also, and other info on the pic I post as far as recommendations or suggestions are appreciated. I am still learning on this tractor, but I am mechanically inclined somewhat. Thanks.

The bush hog I am using is a 6 foot trailer-type.

It might help to put up a photo of the 3pt hitch. They don't all attach in the same manner.

If it is a trailer type it doesn't hook to anything but the drawbar which appears to be attached already in the photo. The three point adapters would fit into the snap couplings, open them place the 3PH tee type male end and snap the coupling shut. I think you may have to remove the drawbar to fit the rest of it into the belly connection. Would have to see a photo of your 3 PH to see.

Poor picture, but the 3 PH is sitting on the bush hog. You can see the arms hanging down, I think it is upside down in this pic possibly, but it does attach to the pin hitch as well. I want to be able to lift my bush hog off the ground if I need to somehow. I know the 3 PH will lift by the hydraulics, but I was not sure how to lift the bush hog or if I even need a center upper link arm to operate with this tractor at all. Like I said, I am only 1 week into the tractor world, so I have a lot to learn. Thanks.

The 3PH adapter is upside down in your picture. You will remove the drawbar from the tractor, install the snap coupler to 3PH adapter into the snap coupler bell, then attach the 3PH adapter vertical links to the snap coupler latches on the lift arms. The top link, which is missing in your pictures, can be attached to the bosses on the housing behind the rockshaft on the tractor. You can also (depending on what kind of 3 point implement you have) use a shorter top link between the implement and the cross tube on the 3PH adapter itself (if the cross tube has mounting bosses for a top link - being upside down in the picture, I can't tell). Keep in mind that you get better (safer) geometry if you use a longer top link to the tractor body itself.

You do need the top link or else only the front of the implement will lift. You can get them inexpensively at farm supply stores.

Since that brush hog/mower is a tow behind, it appears to have no provisions for any lift links at all so you'll have to do some fabrication if you expect to be able to lift it.

The D14 is a really sweet tractor. Enjoy

I am guessing the Drawbar is the U-shaped bar under the PTO but above the pin hitch? Thanks for the info and some great tips.

You need to remove both the drawbar hanger/cradle (U-shaped piece that is attached to the tractor with two pins) and the drawbar which is bolted to the hanger.

Once you unpin the cradle, you should find that a chain leads from the snap coupler bell under the tractor up the right side of the bell housing to a lever near your right foot (as I recall on a D14).

Push that lever down to release the snap coupler pin in the bell and release the drawbar.

Your bush hog looks to be just a pull type model, not 3-point. If you want to raise and lower it, you'll have to take out the turnbuckle out that's on the rockshaft and put in a hydraulic cylinder. If you have an operator's manual for the tractor, look and see where to hook up the cylinder hose. Just remember you need a HIGH pressure cylinder for that model of tractor. If you use a regular cylinder, you may blow the seals out of it.
