I'm told that it's a John Deere but I'm curious as to how it works. Is it 3PT mounted? Looks to be a cable/pully arrangement of some kind.
It's listed on CL for $100.

That's a Continental post hole digger, they're part of AGCO now. They're made to dig a series of holes to a preset depth. When the auger hits the lower stop, it automatically raises back up into position for the next hole. Pretty neat if everything works like it should.

Post Hole Digger - Yesterday's Tractor Co.
Thanks for the info, guys. I did a search on Continental post hole augers and came up with this one. Very interesting!
Would be neat to know a little more about the mechanics of the unit.

Some more pix for future reference. It's an interesting machine and I'm guessing it was originally designed for tractors without 3PH. The newer ones appear to have the 3PT mounting although the auger raising and lowering is done mechanically with the built-in winching. The profileration of 3PH tractors in the late 40's and 50's probably led to the eventual demise of the concept as there would then be lot of unnecessary mechanism to drive up manufacturing costs. (Just my opinion)
