I''m looking for information on the best tool to raise up beds and dress soil up on potatos. What are you guys using?

A hipper looks like something you could buy used for short money or even make one... There are enough old pieces of equipment laying around on old farms here to make getting a few discs an easy process.

thanks,
Chris

This is what I came up with... I used a dearborn cultivator frame. I had two 19 inch discs from an old hiller and machined them to fit the bolt pattern on an old trailer axle that i cut in half. I heated the hub ends red hot and bent them at 90 degrees. The axle was the same diameter as the cultivator shanks.

That's a great looking hiller there! Good job. Op there are several ways to go, would not take much other than custom hangers to make small disc gang into a hipper.

Thank you for the compliment. These photos were when I was first trying it out. Since then I moved the discs to the back of the frame and put some of the cultivator shanks and tines back on in front of them. This really helped to break up the packed dirt behind the tires and it worked even better. You can get disc and shank combinations in many diameters on ebay at a reasonable price and I might add a couple more later on. The discs that I used had belonged to my father since I was a kid and I was happy that I was able to find a way to use them.

Here is a picture of my home made hiller. I built it with 16" wheels at 45* angle. It works well.
I haven't tried it as a cultivator, but suspect it would do OK up to the limit of the clearance my tractor has.
There is room on the frame for a second set of wheels. Making two hills per pass. It also works well. And would be great for flood irrigation and other growing practices like that. But then you would have to cultivate by hand or walk behind machine.
Good luck

I have a small 25 hp massey (18 pto) sub and have been thinking too. I saw a pic. somewhere on line of a one row TPH cultivator with hiller disks on it and cult. teath in the other spots. looked good and easy to make and can be used to just weed as well. That is what I am thinking, but am still looking to see what else others are doing.

Here are a couple I built. One uses the metal parts from an old horse drawn set of hoes I found & the other I made using spare discs I inherited with an old Ferguson disc harrow. Both work well & attach to my tractor using my hand-crafted trailer hitch/log skidder. I also made a harrow/rock rake using an old bent-up harrow I drug out of the woods - doesn't work real well, needs some tweaking. Split tractor in Sept. to replace clutch, etc. & painted/new decals while it was apart. What a little work horse.
