Herd M-96 Fertilizer/Spreader 3-Point Hitch
Looking to buy a Herd M-96 Seeder/Spreader. Anyone have anything to say about Herd? Good/Bad, Other? The spreader is a few years old but in good shape and the guy wants $400.00 for it. New it would be about $650.00. Should i go for it? Thanks

Re: Herd M-96 Fertilizer/Spreader 3-Point Hitch
Last summer I found a used "spreader" on CL. When I looked at the picture I saw it was a Herd M96. The former owner's son (the old man died) wanted $100. for it....and it was only used a few times. I immediately jumped in the car and drove 30 miles to buy it. Probably wouldnt be able to duplicate that deal again.
Is $400 fair? Id say its worth 1/2 of a new one....but $400 may be a stretch. Make the guy an offer?
I've used it twice so far. Works great. They are widely regarded as the best broadcast seeder. In my case I was actually looking for an inexpensive fertilizer spreader when I found my "deal". I do use mine for fertilizer....but I clean it up real well after use and spray it with fluid film after use. So far....so good.3320 eHydro, 300CX Loader & 15 + great attachments

Re: Herd M-96 Fertilizer/Spreader 3-Point Hitch
Thank you for the reply. I ended up buying it for $375. Probably too much but at least the search is over. What do you spray on the unit when you are done cleaning? I am assuming motor oil but wouldn’t that contaminate the fertilizer or seed the next time you use it. Also, I am planning to spread lime a month before seeding. I know lime is very corrosive. How do you think the Herd will handle the lime? Do you think it will handle lime powder or should I get the lime crystals?

Re: Herd M-96 Fertilizer/Spreader 3-Point Hitch
I bought a Herd 750 spreader real cheap because the previous owner didn't do a very good job washing the lime out of it after use. I ended up replacing the aluminum spreader fan and hopper base and the output shaft on the gear box. Over all the price wasn't bad at all and Herd was easy to deal with. I would just hose it very well and then let it air dry. If you want to use something I would go with Fluid Film. It's non toxic wax based and will protect the steel a lot better than diesel or motor oil.

Re: Herd M-96 Fertilizer/Spreader 3-Point Hitch
I have an EZ Flow drop spreader and use that for ag lime.....so I have not used a Herd on lime. I gotta wonder if this is the right spreader for lime? Maybe pelletized lime and small loads to see how it works?
After fertilizer.....I clean my spreader with a broom....then an air blow gun and water before putting on a light coat of fluid film. I suppose diesel fuel would be OK too.....if you get it good and clean. After a season of storage....the fluid film is still there.....and wipes away with a rag. Very good product.....get it at JD dealers. Kinda $$$...but worth it for some things.3320 eHydro, 300CX Loader & 15 + great attachments
