Looks like that Maschio H series needs a set of Boron Steel tines. $6.75 each delivered.

Made it back home safely. Here it is on the back of the truck.

And after a quick power wash to get the mud and crud off it. Not a single ding in the deck, so I don't think this has ever been used in rocky soil. Also no evidence at all of any leaks from the chain drive cover.

Here's the adjustment screw after screwing it in as far as it would go and then back out one turn.

Rear view.

Close up of center gear box. There is some evidence of a very slow oil leak here. I'll be sure to check the level of oil in this one when I drain it.

The rear flap did get hit backing up at some point in the past, but I think I can straighten that out no problem.

Rear flap raised. Not sure if that bent bracket is supposed to line up and allow you to somehow lock the flap in the raised position?

All 60 tines look in good condition and have even wear. Not sure how much wear are on these tines as I have nothing to reference them against other than the stock photo I posted before. Looks quite usage to me with the amount of wear on these tines.

Serial plate. Looks like this was made in 2000?

I'll report back once I get the oil drained and replaced in both gear boxes. But my initial impression is very positive and I really don't think this tiller has that many hours in it.

You did good, that is mildly used. Definately saved yourself some cash.

Yep... very good deal, there! I sold my JD 660 tiller a couple of years ago - $1,850. For whatever reason; tillers hold their value - IMO. After looking high and low for several years for a bigger replacement tiller - folk's generally don't wanna just sell 'em off!

You'll need to attach a section of 5/16" chain on the rear tine door. Couple of turnbuckles. Raise or lower the door to either increase or decrease the aggressiveness of the tine action on the tilled soil. Lowered door holds the soil into the tine area for a longer duration.

Rototiller gear boxes are similar to mower gear boxes for condensation and "milky" gear oil. Should not be alarmed if so - IMO. Look for corrosion and rust on gears, however. Sign of no regular replacement of gear oil.

That tiller looks in excellent condition with probebly not very much use. You did allright on that deal.
Let me know how you plan to check the oil level in the side gear case. There is no oil check hole.

My understanding is that you use a homemade dip stick to check the oil level. I plan on draining the oil after checking the level and then refill with fresh oil. Looks like I should use 85W/140 oil.

I was able to find the manual online, and it looks like I'm missing the rod for the rear flap:

Got the part numbers:

Now I just need to source the parts, or get the JD 681 tiller equivalents.

I'm sure it will work just fine without that rod, it will just leave a real "fluffy" finish, since there will be no down pressure applied.

The guy that sold it to you was right. Some tines do need replaced(although it's not critical right now). on the last pic........far left tine is to a point, it needs replaced. Generally the tines should be the same width, throught the length of the tine.

And as was already posted, you can use a length of chain, from the 'bent bracket' to the 'flap' for your adjustment.

You got a great deal on the tiller.
