Get the mower up on something (trailer). You can remove the hole cover if you want but I think all it's good for is pictures. Clean off around the bolt head, swing blade out of the way, on it's pivot not the mount. Put a long 3/4" box end on the head with handle down, tap, [impact] the wrench with a hammer to loosen bolt. You don't have to remove the bolt, just loosen it enough to turn the blade pin lock. Tap up from the bottom the blade pin to remove it. Reverse order for assembly. Don't tighten them so tight! I took mine all apart and reassembled with anti seize View attachment 474890

Exactly how I do mine. Down to and including the never-seize.

Just realize that an RM990 and an RD990 are different machines. I have an RM that was brought back from dead 10 years ago; it's a great machine. I don't think an RD is half the mower an RM is from what I hear. The blades are not easy or convenient to change on either, but it really isn't a big deal for me.
(This isn't a hi jack) RickB, what did you do to "resurrect" the old RM990?

It190b......Thanks so much for the response. I have been out of touch for a couple of weeks so pardon the late reply. Obviously your mower is not a RD990X since it has access from the top. I only wish it was that easy on mine. You can probably use an impact to remove your blades from the top side. If I can determine a way to keep the spindle shaft from turning, I will try your suggestion of the downward pointing wrench and the hammer to try and break it loose. I've tried wedging a block of wood and it keeps slipping out of place and there doesn't seem to be any way to block the shaft from the top. Back to the drawing board tomorrow I guess. Thanks again.

Birdlover.....Re: Too long pto shaft. I damaged the pto shaft cover on mine and, in my phone conversations with tech support, someone asked me to send him a picture of the shaft. He discovered that the factory had installed the wrong shaft on my mower. He said it was NEVER intended for use on the RD990X. So they shipped me the correct shaft and it fits perfectly. It will not have to be shortened. Made things so much easier. Thanks for your input.
